1999 Arad Earthquake

An earthquake measuring 6.3 in magnitude would occur in an area 17 km north of the city of Arad, at 08:39am. The earthquake caused chaos as shocked residents of Arad rushed out of houses, vehicles, and buildings. Roads in some parts of the city cracked in two, while the walls of buildings collapsed, crushing parked cars. Numerous underground lines such as water pipelines and sewerage system were severely damaged; cutting water supplies to many towns and disrupting internet and telephone services throughout the entire region. The damaged sewerage system also made matters worse as it started contaminating the water from the damaged underground water pipelines. Thousands of properties including residential houses, business establishments, and overhead electrical poles, were destroyed by the earthquake and aftershocks.

Within minutes of the earthquake hitting Israel, the Turkish Earth and Marine Sciences Institute(EMSI) would pick up the 6.3 earthquake occurring in Israel. While far away enough to not be a threat to the human population and infrastructure of Turkey, the EMSI would alert the National Government of the event and the Turkish Navy which had a Cubuklu-class Survey Ship capable of gathering information on the exact epicenter of the quake in order to gather information on what the extent of the damage could be in the affected area. This would be private and not shared as Israeli-Turkish relations are negative at the moment and unlikely to change in the near future. The condition of Palestine would be monitored through and FASU would be put on alert along with the Red Crescent in case of emergency deployment to Palestine.

The Egyptian Cabinet- excluding the Foreign Minister, who was on the phone- would gather to discuss the situation. After analysing the severity of the earthquake, the Prime Minister directed his Interior Minister to offer Israel some 300 soldiers, of the 19th Infantry Division based in Alexandria, to assist in humanitarian aid, should they become necessary.

Working through the day, Magen David Adom teams from local areas had been drafted in to assist victims and treat casualties. Israel Fire and Rescue Services units had been called up to secure and preserve infrastructure whilst their counterparts raced to save as many lives as possible. Local hospitals were reaching capacity and it was decided that hospitals in the nearby city of Eilat were to be used to treat casualties with police vans being used to transport walking-wounded casualties to local facilities.

Gas supplies across the city had been isolated due to the risk of explosions and fires occurring due to the owing risk of aftershocks.

The death tally stood at 131 deaths.

Prime Minister Ganzouri sat with his Cabinet. The Deputy Defence Minister- Adham Maalouf- was standing in for the Defence Minister, who, as he was also the President, he was on the phone. The Deputy Interior Minister, Sadiki Nazari, was also there.

"So what do we know?" Ganzouri demanded.

The Health Minister, Ismail Awad-Allah Sallam, was the first to reply.

"Not a lot, Prime Minister, although the eathquake is bad. The Egyptian Meteorological Authority has told us that it is measured somewhere between 5 and 7 on the Richter Scale."

Ganzouri nodded. "And our response?"

Maalouf answered. "I have 300 soldiers of the 19th Infantry Division in Alexandria ready to march across the Suez by the end of this month. Pontoon bridges are being made as quickly as possible. The Ministry of Health can send in ambulances across the border within hours. We are prepared to call in volunteers to assist us. Operation Full Moon will begin on your order."

The Saudi Arabian Government would not have the equipment to measure the earthquake but after the media reports and light shaking near the western border Saudi Arabia would make sure the nearby nations of Jordan, Palestine, and Egypt were fine and if assistance was needed. Saudi Arabia would also notify the Israeli Government and ask if Israel was in need of immediate assistance as the Saudi Government would look to improve its image and put certain “cultural” differences aside for international aide.
