Devastation from 7.2 Magnitude Earthquake, the Local hospital
In late November 1999 at 18:39(6:39) a magnitude 7.2 Earthquake would occur only a few kilometers from the city of Düzce at dawn causing massive damage across the city almost immediately as buildings shook and collapsed under the ferocious power of the quake. Almost immediately communication towers would be rendered inoperable and power for the region would cease. Along with this many older structures which had been weakend by previous smaller earthquakes were wiped out as the foundations proved to simply turn into dust trapping or killings hundreds. Within minutes surrounding areas would be hit as well causing momentary power outages across northwest Turkey, even in Istanbul where the Prime Minister and various other Government heads were present. Within 20 minutes the President would be notified, still in Australia, to announce a major disaster declaration for the area. Local emergency services were destroyed and the main road into the city had been blocked by overturned vehicles and landslides. Emergency services would be called in from Istanbul and Kocaeli to assist the city, meanwhile local authorities would turn off all water and gas lines to prevent contamination and fires. The MHP would act quickly with the Ministry of Defense and deploy the 902nd Logistics Battalion and 20th Reconnaissance Battalions to assist in disaster relief. A televised statement from the Prime Minister would occur later that night to inform Turkish Citizens and the World of the catastrophe and that the Nationalist party will do everything in it’s power to ensure the situation is handled properly. Teams of military engineers would also be deployed across the region to ensure that all major infrastructure was safe for use and hadn't been significantly harmed. Early reporting the day after has already shown at least 280 dead and over 500 unaccounted for.
