March, 2000 - Rabat, Speech by Mohammed VI
"The concept of a Moroccan Kingdom is not a new one. The first Berber kingdoms formed over 2000 years ago, and since then many changes have occured on our land and throughout the world, and yet Morocco still exists. Not the power of Rome, the power of the Umayyads nor the power of both the Spanish and French Empires combined could prevent our independance, and as such the continuaty of the idea, and the existance of a Moroccan state is almost guaranteed, no matter the state of the world, it is something that is desired, something that can work.
Yet, times are changing. Foreign millitaries around the world are growing at alarming rates, while threats to our sovereignty pose themselves much closer to our borders, and so to neglect the defence of our nation would be a costly and foolish mistake, as well as betraying our nation's history of perseverance and survival.
Correspondingly, in the following years it can be expected that the size and quality of our millitary will greatly increase, so that the citizens of our nation, from Dakhla to Tangier, can live their lives, free and safe within the hands of the Moroccan state."
