DEPUTY PRIME MINISTER MINISTER FOR FOREIGN AFFAIRS |
SECURITY CLASSIFICATION: PROTECTED (Encrypted) |
6 January 1997 |
Dear Whom it May Concern, At this present time we exceed your maximum allowance for diplomatic, mission and security staff at our embassies. May I reiterate that our diplomatic and mission staff are unarmed and all our security staff are contracted by security companies in your nation. Due to our proximity to Indonesia, our close relationship with Indonesia and the massive exchange of people that occur between Indonesia and Australia we are asking for 300 diplomatic and mission staff in our massive embassy in Jakarta, 100 staff in our Consulate-General in Denpasar, our largest Consulate-General anywhere in the world due to Bali being a tourist hotspot for Australias and 50 staff each in our Consulate-General's in both Surabaya and Makassar. Due to the security situation in Indonesia being unstable at the best of times we are asking for 30 security contractors at the Embassy, 20 in Denpasar and 10 each in Makassar and Surabaya. We hope you understand Australia's need for such high numbers of personnel in Indonesia. Yours Sincerely, Dr. Carmen Lawrence. |
