DEPUTY PRIME MINISTER MINISTER FOR FOREIGN AFFAIRS |
SECURITY CLASSIFICATION: PROTECTED (Encrypted) |
6 January 1997 |
Dear Whom it May Concern, At this present time we exceed your maximum allowance for diplomatic, mission and security staff at our embassies. May I reiterate that our diplomatic and mission staff are unarmed and all our security staff are contracted by security companies in your nation. Due to Australia's proximity to Asia and our need for a close working relationship with Asia, we deem it necessary that our embassies in this region be slight larger then average. For that reason we are asking to have 200 diplomatic and mission staff in our sizeable Embassy in Seoul and 50 diplomatic and mission staff in a Consulate-General in Busan. We hope you understand our need for such high numbers due to the close working relationship between our two nations. Yours Sincerely, Dr. Carmen Lawrence. |
