[1] OVERVIEW
[1a] BACKGROUND
The protection that the Royal Australian Navy give in the Indian Ocean is pivotal to combat sea–based terrorism and other illegal activities, such as hijacking, piracy, and slavery, also known as human trafficking as well as assisting seafaring vessels in distress. If the flow of ships and cargo in the region stops it will impact on everyone in the Commonwealth and more widely around the world. Promoting peace and security in the region helps to ensure the safe flow of oil and trade.
