STATEMENT FROM THE PRIME MINISTER OF AUSTRALIA Australia has always stood for peace. Australia believes that peace must prevail in the Antarctic continent and it is to be used for research purposes only. Australia unequivocally condemns the recent actions by the Republic of Argentina to use military force in the Antarctic continent. This matter must be resolved diplomatically and peacefully. These actions violate the principles that Australia stands for and has proposed in the Global Assembly resolution. Whilst Australia has already condemned Sweden, it would be hypocritical to not also condemn Argentina for likewise using military force in Antarctica. Australia has never resorted to military force on the Antarctic continent and does not plan to ever resort to that. We ask that the Argentine Government withdraws its military forces from Antarctica and finds a peaceful resolution to this matter. |
