Due in no small part to what some are calling political ineptitude, The Marrissens administration stared down a vote of no confidence in the National Assembly.
The Opposition levied the following accusations against Prime Minister Marrissens and his administration:
- Corruption
- Conspiracy to Undermine the Rule of Law in Belgium wherein the security of individual rights and honest government is called into question by an abuse of office that negates the constitutional order
- Conspiracy to initiate a war of aggression against France as noted by The Lille Incident of July 1996
- Attempted efforts to obtain constitutional emergency powers via proxy through the King
- Creating a debt crisis through a consistent lack of transparency and public oversight jeopardizing the lives of the people and contributing to a 10% rise in unemployment over the course of 9 months
The Assembly convened in Brussels as per usual and after 6 hours of heated debate, it was decided that Marrissens would continue to govern the country until 1998. Thereafter, he will be dismissed from office and by law compelled to leave the country.
