Canada | The Transition

Canada had been in political turmoil for the last six weeks as a scandal indicating behavior that led to the resignation of the Prime Minister, Deputy Prime Minister, and a few other members of parliament implicated in being aware of the scandal. Laws broken, reputations tarnished, and schemes to earn the parliament members and ministers money from kickbacks exposed. The unlikeliest choice, at least in the mind of now Prime Minister William J. Shelton, for prime minister selected and put into office with a new parliament with the last dissolved.

William Shelton was a physician and had served as the Minister of Health and member of parliament before his new office. Before entering the political world, he was a military officer and physician serving in the Royal Canadian Navy and retiring as Surgeon General and a Rear Admiral. His political platform consists of National Defence, Domestic Preparedness, overall Public Safety, and of course, health.

Life was a whirlwind working on moving to his new residence at 24 Sussex Drive and his new office at the Langevin Block. Currently, he was residing in Rideau Cottage while preparations were being made for him and his wife to move into Sussex Drive. Despite having an apartment in the capital city for his role as Minister of Health, his security requested a move, and he and his wife agreed reluctantly.

Will sat in a leather rolling desk chair at a large oak desk in the study of the cottage. He felt out of place and like he was sitting in an overly lavish hotel room. Will worried that his official residence would be worse than this. He doubted it would work well to keep the apartment he rented but was relieved to find his primary home, near Vancouver, could have security improvements made to allow him to stay from time to time.

Tomorrow's to-do list sat on the desk before him, pen in his right hand, specially ordered navy blue ink in his pen. The to-do list he created and completed each day was a habit learned in the Royal Naval College. A guest lecturer talked about how they had done it since high school and felt it was one of the keys to success. As he reflected on the speech the Major-General had given he chuckled to himself on how the Commander of Special Forces Operations Command taught someone who went on to be a physician how to be successful. All walks of life could contribute to each other he knew well.

Call the President of the United States was listed with two stars next to it something he still couldn't believe that he had written. He would be making a phone call to who people called the leader of the free world. Canada was no superpower but did it one day have the ability to affect the whole world? Could he and his country make it a better place to exist? He shook his head as the thoughts rolled through his mind he was getting ahead of himself. First, he needed to solve the corruption issues, fix the direction of his nation, and hopefully succeed in rebuilding the safety and security of the nation he felt the two previous administrations had ruined.
