SUBMARINE OPERATIONS TRAINING Classified Information ​

Operation Background

As part of the regular operational capacity improvement schedule, the egyptian naval command would order the execution of submarine operations training, involving all submarines available in the Egyptian Navy. This first training would be focused on executing basic maneuvers and familiarizing with the eastern Mediterranean underwater environment. Practiced skill: Mediterranean submarine operations I.

Logistical Details
The area of operations would be limited to sector KM, on egyptian and international waters. The submarines would depart fully crewed and supplied, with all systems operative. Additional bathymetric charts and seabed maps would be taken on board to detail and comment them.

The submarines would be fully supplies, crewed and readied to depart from their corresponding homeports. Those stationed in ports on the Red Sea would be prepared to cross the Suez Canal from south to north, in order to participate in these Mediterranean exercises.

The submarines would have orders to head directly to deeper waters first. Once at a safe distance from the coast, they would dive to a cruising depth of 200m. This would be done by all types of submarines involved in this exercise. Crews would be at their stations and everyone would be performing their duties. Each submarine would have individual orders and coordinates, and they had to follow a pre-determined route.

They would do so following their instruments and scanning their surroundings making use of their active sonar, which would give them echoes of surrounding underwater physical obstacles, passing surface units and potentially other submarines.

The subs would begin their predetermine route, following charted waypoints. They would do so at an average cruising speed, maintaining their active sonar pinging against surrounding surface and underwater obstacles.

The commanding officers of the submarines would present simulated incidents between these waypoints and impart instructions to their crews as a form of training and getting used to the extreme conditions a submarine has to endure during real operations.

These "incidents" would be for example the detection of an hostile ship vessel, the release of depth charges, the detection of an incoming torpedo or sudden changes in depth. Emergency drills would also be performed, in the form of emergency surfacing.

All submarines would conduct these simulations at the discretion of the commanding officer, judging the environment as safe and proper for them to be conducted.

In case of real emergencies or technical difficulties, the submarines would surface and follow the corresponding protocol.

The submarines would continue with their training. The soanr operators would conduct a series of exercises to practice their detection capability and skill of classification of objects, both organical and inorganical.

They would do so making use first of the active radar, while the submarines are moving. But then, during scheduled stops indicated by the captain, they would switch over to the use of passive sonars. They would listen and classify the different detections.

In the meantime, other teams of the crews would practice their routine operations, like conducting routine maintenance tasks.

This would apply to all submarines engaed in this exercise.

Having practiced the use of passive and active sonars, and run several drills to test the capacity of the crews and improve it, the program would now put the submarine crews to exercise some drills to improve their capacity to remain undetected while operating in hostile waters.

For this purpose, the submarines would continue their journey through the waypoints on complete silence, reducing at times its speed to reduce their noise emissions (crews would also be ordered to speak only if necessary and avoid any metallic noises).

Eventually, the commander would order the crews to halt the submarine completely and if conditions are right in terms of depth, currents and seabed topography, to "park" the submarine on the seafloor and activate its passive sonar to monitor the area and detect "hostile" units.

The submarine crews would have completed by now the pre-defined route and surface. Once there, they would receive new orders, regarding how to tackle the last part of their program training program.

The submarine crews would be ordered to head back towards their homeport, on a near surface depth to maintain active communications (and avoid any collision or hazard). They would be instructed to scan and update the bathymetric maps en route from their current locations to their homeports. This would be done so in order to gain a better knowledge of the eastern Mediterranean seabed and to located potential places to "hide" or escape under real combat situations.

Once they arrive at their ports, they would return to their routine duties.
