The east coast of Australia would be one of the first places in the world to welcome in the year 2000. Fireworks would be launched from the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Sydney Opera House and across Sydney Harbour. In Melbourne, fireworks were launched across the Yarra River bank area. 35,000 people would flood Sydney Harbour to watch the fireworks and there would be an intense police presence across the country making sure party goers were safe.
