PROJECT INFORMATION | Connected to the rollout of a nationwide fiber optic network is the expansion of the country's existing 3G network with 4G/LTE technology. Access to 4G/LTE will allow consumer access to higher speed internet on their mobile devices and encourage the expansion of online services such as gaming and media, however more importantly it is the first step to achieving the Internet of Things. While the fiber optic network is much faster and preferable for economic activity to the much slower wireless technology, not all devices can be connected to a fixed line. Examples such as irrigation equipment on farms, remote monitoring facilities and highly mobile services need access to higher speed wireless internet. The construction of a 4G/LTE network provides exactly that. The network will use equipment from Japanese technological companies, which are market leaders in the field. The expansion will occur in three stages. In the first stage the network will be brought online in Tokyo and Kyoto, in the second stage it will be brought online in all other cities, and in the final stage it will be brought online in all rural areas. Like the fiber optic network it will be owned by NTT, however also like the fiber optic network other cellular providers can obtain access to the network for a usage fee. |
