PROJECT INFORMATION | With the increasing importance of internet in the world, the government of Japan has launched an ambitious new program to construct a nationwide fiber optic network. Every home and business will be connected to this network and packages will be made available offering speeds from 10 Mbps to 1 Gbps to civilian residences, speeds from 100 Mbps to 10 Gbps to Small and Medium Enterprises and 100 Mbps to 25 Gbps to large enterprises. These speeds can also be increased in the future as current speeds are based on lasers currently available. The limitations of fiber have not yet been determined but in lab conditions it has been shown to be well in excess of dozens of Tbps. The network will be owned by NTT, Japan's largest internet service provider, and use Toshiba lasers, transmitters, receivers, transceivers and all other networking equipment from Toshiba and other Japanese companies. Granting the entire nation access to high speed broadband internet will increase the efficiency of production processes, allow new innovative approaches in remote management of everything from factory floors to farming equipment, drastically increase revenue by allowing business to move from brick and mortar stores to online stores and sell both nationally and internationally, and connect Japan further to the world wide web encouraging innovation and cultural growth (resulting in a smarter and more globally aware population). Access to the internet has already shown to be an enormous multiplier to economic output and one that increases exponentially with technology advances to provide faster and better internet. |
