PROJECT INFORMATIONThe Bouvet Mountain Complex (Codename: "Myrkheim" which is the Old Norse word that roughly translates to "Dark Abode" and is the home of the Dwarves) will be a secret Norwegian military facility and perhaps the most isolated major military complex in the world. The facility will be located on the Norwegian island of Bouvet which itself is the most isolated and secluded island on Earth. The vast majority of the island is covered by a thick ice cap and is virtually uninhabitable. There are very small parts of the outskirts of the volcanic island which are not covered by ice and are likely the result of landslides that have revealed rocky dirt at the edges of the island.

The largest of these areas, located on the West of the island, was chosen to be the location of Myrkheim. The location was chosen because the bare dirt and land on the outside is large and level enough to have a runway, and there is a stark enough contrast in topography at a certain point to the East to serve as a proper entrance to the mountain. The complex itself is only a small part of the island, but will be an integral part of Norway's ability to project power. The facility's isolation also means that it can serve as a testing ground for sensitive R&D equipment as well as a strategic refueling point for Norwegian aircraft and navy vessels.

The layout of the facility can be found in the following image. It's important to remember that this sketch is approximate, but was made to be as accurate as possible seeing as no major construction has ever been done or even attempted on Bouvet Island. In fact, only one known accurate topographic map - from the Norwegian Polar Institute - exists:


The following details are specifically in reference to the map which is provided above this text. Each major piece of infrastructure on the map will be described after the following color code.

Black: The black lines expanding into the sea and guarding the coast are very large and strong breakwaters that are built to work in the rough seas.
Dark Red: roads.
Red: Runway.
Light Grey: ship parking area or underground thoroughfare.
Dark Grey: underground enclosed space.
Light Blue: Underground water area.
Pink: Non-lighthouse surface structures.

Infrastructure Descriptions:

A. "Dark Harbor"
This is a massive man-made harbor which is almost entirely surrounding by artificial breakwaters. The harbor is designed to hold eleven ships of varying sizes; however, more ships can be held, as well as different sizes, if need be. The edges of the harbor are properly designed to hold and anchor ships in place when they are parked. The northern third of the breakwater is even thicker and has a strong road that ends towards the southwest. This road exists to accommodate an aircraft carrier or helicopter carrier if one were to dock. To the south of the harbor is the entrance where there are two small harbor-lighthouses which flash white lights. The lights are only visible to the south and somewhat to the southwest. These lights are roughly fifty feet tall and exist in order to safely guide ships into Dark Harbor, even at night or in poor visibility. Tugboats are also in Black Harbor to guide ships in and out.

B. "Blue Light"
This lighthouse is eighty feet tall. It guides ships toward Dark Harbor. It, and the other lighthouses, are built on strong foundations and are designed to deflect or guide away water in very rough conditions.

C. "Black Cove"
This is smaller than Dark Harbor, and does not normally house any ships within it itself. Instead, the primary entrance for submarines to the base is here. The island's largest lighthouse is located at the bottom of the artificial cove, and otherwise seems pointless from space. The entrance for submarines cannot be seen from the sky and is even difficult to notice from sea level. It is, however, easy for submarines to make use of. The entrance can be temporarily closed if necessary.

D. "Crimson Lighthouse"
This is the tallest lighthouse in Norway, standing at 250 feet. As its name implies, the massive stone structure has a red, crimson beam that can be seen well beyond the 14 mile horizon. The piercing beam rotates in all directions, but is of course blocked to the east by the massive island. This light, as the rest, are all automated. However there are five lighthouse keepers assigned to Bouvet Island who are in charge of maintaining the lights and ensuring that they are kept in working order. The Crimson Lighthouse connects to an underground structure to the east which is owned and operated by the Royal Lighthouse Service. The lighthouse keepers are the only authorized personnel for these facilities. Part of their responsibility is to operate a radio station from the lighthouse. Due to the secretive nature of the island, the existence of the base is denied by the Norwegian government. Therefor, any vessel or aircraft getting close to the island would likely have contact made with them by the crew of the lighthouse. The underground facilities include canned food, relaxing and living quarters, working quarters, recreational facilities for the keepers, and the radio station. There is also storage space for equipment used to repair the lights.

E. "Bouvet Runway"
This is an asphalt runway complete with runway lights and paint. The runway itself is exactly 6025 feet long (nearly two kilometers) and is 100 feet wide. It is designed to safely land aircraft such as the C-130 (essentially all variants), the C-5, and other military and transport aircraft. The runway is of course level and is maintained as any other functioning commercial/military runway would be. Connecting to the runway are various roads. When the runway is not in use for aircraft, it is often used by vehicles with the permission of the air traffic control tower on the island. The runway goes out into the sea, but is properly built up in a way that such a runway in such conditions would be constructed.

F. "Storage Warehouse"
This is a large building used for storage of fuel, munitions, weapons, and other dangerous materials. It's designed so that if it were to fall victim to an uncontrolled explosion, the northern wall would fail while the other walls are reinforced. Fuel is normally directed from this building to refuel ships and aircraft. Service equipment and temporary storage is also kept in this building which is secure and has ample security.

G. "Recreation Facility"
This is an enclosed structure that serves no military or technical purpose, but instead exists to provide air traffic controllers and other personnel a place where they can see the light, but also be inside where its warm. Like all other buildings on the island, it is of course properly built and insulated for the cold, and also heated. The building includes an exercise room, a bar, a living space with televisions, a small library, and a quiet area where staff can take short rests with a view of the outside.

H. "Air Traffic Control Tower" AKA "Control Tower"
This is the air traffic control tower which directs all aircraft and ground traffic to and from the runway. It is manned by at least two air traffic control officers of the Royal Air Force at all times. The air traffic control tower has a ground-based radar to detect aircraft.

I. "Outdoor Emergency Operations Center" AKA "The Firehouse"
This building includes emergency vehicles and personnel who can react to a disaster on the runway or any part of the outdoor facility. Part of the building also includes a place for armed security, and is exceptionally secure. This building includes a bay for emergency vehicles, transport vehicles, construction vehicles and equipment, a sickbay, an armory, a barracks, and a radio command center.

J. "Submarine Sector" AKA "Sub Base"
This is a massive underground complex that has two entrances: one from Dark Bay, and the other from Black Cove. Both of these entrances are not visible from the air and are nearly invisible from sea level, unless one manages to get up very close. However, it is easily usable by a submarine or very small surface craft. The doors to these entrances can be temporarily sealed if need be. The inside 955 feet East to West and 582 feet North to South. It is designed to hold submarines and can easily adjust from high tide to low tide outside because the structure is tall enough to do so. The entire thing is underground and not visible from the air. The Sub Base is blast-resistant and designed to withstand bombing, as are the tunnels and entrances that the subs can use. The primary tunnel is located in Black Cove.

K. "Hanger"
This is a massive underground hanger where various aircraft can be stored or parked for any period of time. This underground area is reinforced but not visible from above, and can house large amounts of aircraft. Aircraft can be maintained here and, if necessary, armed and fueled. The entrance to the hanger is 165 feet wide and tall enough to accommodate heavy lifting-cargo and troop transport aircraft. The hanger has a small area for pilots who are on stand-by duty where they can relax. The entry door for the hanger can be closed and is water-tight; however it's above where high-tide occurs.

L. "Sector 5" AKA "Utility Sector"
This sector includes a small conventional power station, water purification and sterilization equipment, air purification equipment, several boiler rooms to pump hot water around the complex, and other important utilities.

Sectors 1,3, and 4 are civilian sectors where large numbers of people can be housed and live for an extended period of time. These underground sectors, in total, can house 3000 people at maximum capacity. These sectors include all ranges of living facilities from sleeping areas to recreation areas to canteens and all other kinds of necessary places. The entire underground facility itself is capable of using only internal air and water in the event of an emergency and has enough fuel stored to power the facility for two weeks without being replenished.

N. "Sector 2" AKA "Command Center"
This sector is the grand command center of the entire complex. It is able to command with the rest of the major facilities of the complex, from the interior to the outside. The Command Center also has access to all radar and monitoring data, and is also in control of base security.

Q. This is a large helicopter landing area with numerous helipads.

Security Features
1. Regular armed foot patrols take place around the facility, especially around the above-ground areas.
2. Every building has security cameras inside and outside of it which are motion activated.
3. Doors require plastic entry keys.
4. All personnel are required to carry identification cards and will be detained if they don't have their IDs on them. The IDs have chips which can't simply just be copied.
5. Beds and rooms are assigned.
6. There are ground sensors around the base to detect any intruders.
7. Army soldiers stay outside to keep watch around the base and are heavily armed.
8. Five ground-based radar (HADR Sindre I) stations are placed around the island, and manned, to ensure that the airspace around the island can be monitored. These radar stations have radomes around them and are properly maintained for the environment that they are in. Each radar station has enough food and power to be self-sustaining for a few weeks. They are replenished regularly.
9. Construction of this project is top secret and the construction is done only by exceptionally vetted construction workers and personnel - the majority of which who weren't even told where they were going to do their work. Only native-born Norwegian citizens were used for the construction project.
10. The construction of all underground facilities is designed to withstand bombing and maintain structural integrity as any underground building should.
11. Rocks and navigational hazards to ships are moved out of the way to allow ships proper passage in the areas they should be able to pass, as well as dredging areas that need to be dredged.
