PROJECT INFORMATION | In order to expand capabilities the Swedish Department of Defence, acting for and on behalf of the Strategic Defence Network who manage the ballistic missile capabilities of the Kingdom of Sweden, have commissioned the construction of two ballistic missile silos. These silos will serve part of the upcoming Exercise Radium which will test the capabilities of the Jericho II LRBM. Initial construction costs are capped at $80,000,000.00 per silo, one of which will be constructed at the Marion Island Air Force Base on Marion Island, a part of the Prince Edward Islands. This silo will be disguised as part of the land formation/existing infrastructure built at the base. The second silo will be constructed at the Île Foch Temporary Operating Position in the French and Southern Antarctic Lands. Each silo will be constructed of extremely durable hardened reinforced concrete capable of withstanding the added pressures of the launch of a ballistic missile as well as internal structure to support a range of different sized ballistic missiles giving the Strategic Defence Network to interchange, upgrade and advance the missile capability thus essentially future-proofing the initial silo construction. The project will incorporate the construction of a launch control centre and underground missile storage. |
