Premier Peter Beattie has kicked off the day campaigning in his own electorate and playing down a Brisbane newspaper poll showing Labor is ahead of the Coalition parties on the primary vote. The poll, taken in six marginal seats across Queensland, shows Labor will need the preferences of minor parties and Independents to win in those electorates. However, Mr. Beattie says he is advising his troops not to take too much notice of the poll because surveys in 1995 and 1998 put Labor well ahead of the other parties and it struggled to win office. The poll is sobering news for the Liberal Party, which is trailing Labor in the seats of Springwood and Mt Ommaney in Brisbane's west. Springwood is being vacated by Labor MP Grant Musgrove, who has been forced to resign over the electoral rorts scandal. Liberal leader David Watson has tried to play down his party's poor showing by saying a thick hide is needed in politics and the Liberals are committed to finishing on top. His National Party counterpart, Rob Borbidge, is warning Queenslanders not to "accidentally" give Labor a second term in Government by voting for independent candidates or the minor parties. Meanwhile, the Coalition has promised to fund a 24-hour telephone hotline and at-home courses for parents who want some help with the job of raising children. Peter Beattie's has focused on sport, announcing an extension of funding for local government recreation programs and handing out $475,000 to the Greg Norman Golf Foundation over the next three years. Mr. Beattie attempted to tee-off with Norman at a course still under construction, which has been designed by the golfing great, but he later conceded that as a golfer, he makes a good Premier.

The Premier has spent the day campaigning in Townsville, the city at the centre of Labor's electoral rorts scandal. A Federal Parliamentary Committee investigating the integrity of the electoral roll will hold a hearing in Townsville tomorrow but Peter Beattie has denied he visited the city a day early to avoid having his trip coincide with that inquiry. Mr Beattie says it is improper for the committee to be holding hearings in the middle of an election campaign and he's conceded the inquiry will harm his re-election campaign. The witnesses include Townsville's Labor Mayor, Tony Mooney, who is waiting to hear whether he will face charges as a result of allegations made against him at the Shepherdson Inquiry into electoral rorting. The Premier used his trip to Townsville to announce plans to name convicted violent juvenile offenders, if they escape from custody, and to outline the extension of a program to upgrade medical equipment in public hospitals throughout the state. The Coalition has launched an ad campaign focusing on the electoral rorts scandal, telling voters Labor won't be able to focus on the job of governing the state because it's still distracted by the affair. The Coalition has also announced details of its health policy, promising to spend $76 million on surgery to reduce hospital waiting lists and $56 million for intensive care facilities. Premier Peter Beattie and his opponent, Rob Borbidge, will both campaign in the far north Queensland city of Cairns tomorrow.
