BREAKING NEWS: MAYHEM IN ROME!

426cadfba9bb5476ea3d2090d92271a3.jpg
Described as an explosion in violence not seen since the city was liberated by the Counter-Revolutionaries, Rome today woke up to multiple explosions seemingly originating from Vatican City. Events started early this morning when witnesses inside and near Vatican City reported hearing explosions and gunfire from the Vatican, not soon later clashes were reported at Saint Anne's Gate. The largest loss of life was incurred when the Passetto di Borgo (a well known escape route out of the Vatican to the Castel Sant'Angelo) experienced several explosions along its route. As the Passetto is near Roman residential areas the explosions killed 40 Italians and wounded 150. With 30 of the wounded in critical condition and 300 people still missing the death count is expected to rise. Among the missing most tragically is a class of first graders that had an early start of their day due to a planned fieldtrip, based on the carnage it is believed their bus was destroyed and authorities are still searching for the wreckage.

While initially many feared a return of Communist terrorism, the Ministry of the Interior was quick to announce that the fighting originated from the Vatican and appears to be between the American Guard and the Swiss Guard. Though it is unclear why these groups would fight each other as both are tasked with the protection of the Pope and the Vatican. This has caused rumours that one of the two launched the attack to kill the Pope.

As the nature of the violence is too much for the Roman police to handle, His Royal Majesty the King has declared a State of Emergency and placed the Ministry of Defense in charge of the Duchy of Latium. The Ministry of Defense through the Civil Protection Department has instructed all Romans to avoid the Holy See and Churches for the time being. It has also instructed all Romans to remain indoors and await instructions. To avoid children and commuters getting caught in crossfire all schools and nonessential businesses in Rome have been closed for the next 3 days at least. Roads are being kept clear for emergency services and the military. As the total number of injured is believed to be above 1,000 the Minister of Health has activated emergency triage plans that allow those less severely injured to be transported to hospitals inside Latium and other regions to reduce the strain on the Roman health system and allow it to focus on the most severely injured.

The Ministry of Defense has mobilized and deployed the Mechanized Brigade 'Roma' to repel and disarm American and Swiss Guard on Italian territory, and to restore peace to Rome. Along with a no-fly zone over the city of Rome the Royal Italian Armed Forces are seeking to force combat on Italian soil to ease. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has sent a message to the Holy See offering Italian aid to likewise bring an end to fighting inside the Vatican City, however it has stated clearly that Italy will not break its obligations under the Lateran Treaty and send forces into the enclave without an invitation from the Holy See or unless directly attacked from inside Vatican City.

While the powers currently in control of the Vatican City state the Pope has died in the fighting, as the bells have been rung, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Defense in the first press conference since fighting broke out has stated the Kingdom of Italy is not convinced yet of the Pope's death. When asked about the bells the Press Officer of the General Staff Lieutenant Commander Giulia Rossi stated. "The Minister of Defense is aware of the announcement of His Holiness' death. While we have compelling intelligence that His Holiness was the target of multiple attempts on his life, we have not yet seen compelling confirmation of the attacks' success. It stands to reason that either the American Guard or the Swiss Guard, depending on whoever started the attack, would also be able to force the bells to be rung. Until we have seen third party irrefutable evidence, the Kingdom of Italy and the Royal Italian Armed Forces will continue operating under the assumption His Holiness is still alive and if he is on Italian soil to bring him to safety as soon as possible. Whoever is responsible for these attacks on not only the Church but also the Italian state and people will pay." The Ministry of Defense has issued an order to all Churches in Rome banning the use of their Bells for the next 24 hours. Vatican City has also been surrounded by the Royal Italian Army, whoever is responsible for starting the attack seems to have overestimated their power.

Voce Popolare Victorious in Parliamentary Elections

d80525be2deb21963fa46ec70ab6cec2.jpg
While even the most critical polls had her winning the election, not even the most friendly ones expected by just how much. Following today's Parliamentary elections Mara Carfagna's Voce Popolare is represented by 220 Deputies and 105 Senators, making it the first election since end of the second World War where a victorious party did not need to engage in coalition talks to form a government.

It appears clear that after years of instability and strife caused by ideological extremes, the Italian people have embraced the spirit of true centre and moderation that Carfagna promised. Voce Popolare was formed as a merger of Social Democratic, Christian Democratic and Ecological movements. By not needing to engage in coalition talks with either the Communists or the Nationalists, the party can pursue its progressive reform agenda in Parliament safely.

While the King had made sure to not state any preference ahead of the elections, analysts and experts on His Royal Majesty believe the result is in line with his own agenda for the future of the Kingdom of Italy. Senator Carfagna's Office has announced that the King has already invited her to meet with himself in the Quirinal Palace next Tuesday. It is all but certain at this stage that the King will ask the Senator to begin forming a new government.

While the King enjoys significant powers under the Italian constitution, his power is not absolute and a good working relationship with the legislature and the Prime Minister is essential. Senator Carfagna was one of the first politicians to openly embrace the Monarchy, even when many other opposition movements were still reluctant to commit to the form of government that was to rule Italy after the defeat of the Communists.
