Department of Global Affairs

Phone Call to the Kingdom of Sweden

Edward Reid, Minister of Global Affairs for Canada, would use an encrypted and private line to answer the phone call from the Swedish Ambassador. "Good evening, Ambassador Sjögren, I hope all is well. How can I assist you today?"

"Minister, Good Morning, Im so glad I've been able to catch you and I appreciate you taking this call with no notice... You were probably expecting contact from me following the Department of Foreign Affairs comments on the Canadian-Swedish state of affairs, needless to say the central government have got themselves into a bit of a flap over this. Do you have time to discuss our relationship?"

"Yes, we were quite confused on that statement, to be honest. That was, until we reviewed our global affairs postings. It would appear that our system had a glitch of sorts and posted Norway and Sweden under the wrong coding - the Department is currently fixing this as we speak and it should be back to normal within a few days at the worst. However, while we remain on the phone together we may as well establish proper diplomatic ties. Is there anything specific you wished to begin with, Ambassador Sjögren?"

"Ah, that would make sense, the central government were concerned that our relationship had dramatically deteriorated over matters we were unaware of - as usual I have been sent in their stead to promote the cooperation between the Kingdom of Sweden and Canada. Historically we have been close however I have to be honest we have not had the opportunity to work towards strong bilateral relations we can be proud of... Minister I have to be honest I'd like to discuss your views on the Nordic Council first and foremost; whilst we have a overwhelmingly positive reaction from Europe and parts of Asia, we haven't heard or seen much of continental America. What are your views? Be honest."

"Well, our relations in recent history were not always positive, Ambassador. While Canada is currently open to forming positive relations with Scandinavian nations, we still remember the 'Emergency Resolution on the Canadian Situation'. Luckily, other nations realized that sanctioning a nation and its people for using their rights of democracy was inhumane and ridiculous and the resolution failed. However, we have chosen to look past this aggressive resolution since Sweden was not the master-mind behind it and the Norwegian government that was has collapsed. If you want me to be honest regarding the Nordic Council then I'm afraid it's not good news. While Canada does not hold any disdain or distrust towards the Council and its members, we believe - due to the support for the resolution, that the Council does not have the democratic best interests of its members in mind.

Does that answer your concerns, Ambassador, or did you have anything more specific in mind?"

The Canadian Minister remained on the phone in awkward silence, now having been many days, he really needed to go to the bathroom...

The Canadian Minister would place the Swedish Ambassador on hold so that Reid would be able to attend to other things. Once the Ambassador would return to the phone, Reid would answer it again.

"Well, I understand, but it would be naive to believe a nation of two very different continents would consistently have the same views through the passage of time. I am saddened to hear that despite your wishes to look past this resolution, which was never passed, it still tarnishes your relationship to the Nordic Council. We have proactively been pursuing relationship with nations which have formally been misconstrued by media attention towards the Nordic Council which has undoubtedly damaged the reputation of the organisation - we have moved from focussing on our domestic efforts and now encompass South Korea who has been a strong light guiding our council towards prosperity worldwide and we actively work as a collective for real change."

As Minister Edward Reid was busy speaking with someone else, the call would be transferred to Deputy Minister Marta Morgan. She would take the Ambassador off of hold and use an encrypted line to continue discussing Canadian-Swedish Relations.

"I understand your stance, Ambassador. However, it would be naïve to believe that a nation, its government, and its people would simply forgive and forget such an event in only a year's time. Simply because the resolution was not passed - by one vote, mind you - does not change the fact that it was forwarded to the Global Assembly and supported by the Nordic Council unanimously. As they say: the result is irrelevant because the effort was there. I also don't believe that the media has anything to do with the Nordic Council's pour image, at least not here in Canada. We are more than happy to build new relations with Sweden, however we have no interest in the Nordic Council."

"Uh... Hello?" The voice of Morgan would echo through her empty office, not knowing if there was still anyone else on the other side of the phone.
