Government of Sweden
Löfven Administration
Dear Secretary Jason Green,
Following the public disorder in Paris, France we have received authorisation by the French government to deploy an Armed Support Taskforce from the National Security Office in order to provide the necessary security upgrade to our embassy. Transport will be facilitated by the Swedish Royal Air Force. This is done with the view to keep our diplomatic missions operational for as long as possible providing essential services to those looking to flee. We are providing additional services to US nationals able to present lawfully granted travel documentation and passport and we suspect this provision will grow further as nations worldwide continue to close their missions in France.
In addition to this provision, the government in France have permitted the temporary stationing of SRAF assets at Orly Airport to provide an emergency evacuation facility for diplomatic staff. We have been advised that the state of unrest on the ground would make travelling by road impossible or a substantially heightened security threat; as a result this evacuation facility will be performed by helicopter only.
Please accept this correspondence as a formal request to refuel three Swedish Royal Air Force helicopters, namely Eurocopter AS332 Super Puma from the Scania Air Force Wing, 1st Mission Support Squadron, 1st Mission Support Flight, at Norwich Airport. These aircraft are fully liveried and all arms or offensive equipment will be in a passive mode whilst within your airspace. Upon completion they will continue their onward journey into France. I understand that Norwich Airport is ordinarily a civilian facility however our assessment has determined this to be the only practical option factoring in the operational range of the aircraft and the massive expense of air-to-air refuelling. We are hopeful that this facility be available for the eventual return journey and any subsequent journeys necessary with the aforementioned aircraft.
I look forward to your imminent response.
Regards,
Stefan Nordström
