MHP Rally in Īzmir, Turkey during National Elections 4 Days ago
After nearly a year of some of the most prolific spending in Turkish History in order to expand the Turkish Armed forces to become one of the most powerful in the world, the expenses were certainly rising and fast. Nationwide more and more average middle class Turkish Citizens lost their jobs with over 23% of the Turkish population unemployed as of July, 1999. Not only was unemployment a massive problem but the healthcare system of Turkey was near collapse, with massive negligence due to government corruption and huge debts was causing many hospitals to go without basic materials and unfounded for weeks, leading to increased infections and a greater crisis across the country where basic vaccines, available just a few years ago were now unavailable. To top it all off, the once thriving Turkish Tourism sector had completely fallen through, after the recent Israeli-Arab tensions and the supposed attack on a “civilian airliner” many international citizens had decided to take their money elsewhere and this contributed to a further increase in the nationwide unemployment rate. The Ruling ANAP party, put in power by a coup less than a decade ago was falling apart, Grand National Assembly members resigned, changed parties, or failed to gain re-election.
The Greatest threat was the quickly rising MHP party, an ultranationalist Turkish party described by some as a party for fascism and the destruction of the Jewish State, the enemy of all Arabs. To make things worse, president Diemryl had been absent from public view for weeks after a private health battle at the age of 81 and many feared that his death was coming soon, very soon. The lone survivor in the ANAP party was Prime Minister Mesut Yılmaz, put into power during the last coup and a far right member for the already right leaning ANAP party, he was increasing seeming like the true leader of Turkey but under immense pressure by the MHP who was at a near majority in the Grand National Assembly and was in the process of forming its own coalition government that would have total control over all legislation in the Grand National Assembly. The MHP was also rumored to be connected to the Grey Wolves, a paramilitary group operating throughout the Middle East and currently rumored to be assisting the Islamist Break off from the Russian Federation in committing horrendous acts against non Arabs in the region. Further conflict was on the horizon and with the MHP‘s rising Influence, Turkey was heading down a dark path which could lead to glory or destruction.
