THE WHITE HOUSE

PUBLIC MESSAGE
[TR][TD]

TO: His Excellency Kim Daejung, President of the Republic of Korea
FROM: Al Gore, President of the United States of America

Mister President,

The peaceful unification of the Korean Peninsula is an incredibly inspiring event for Americans and people all over the world. We have watched as one people, who were divided by abstract political boundaries and who operated with different ideologies and systems of government, were able to set aside their differences in order to properly reunite as one nation without a shot being fired. This news is cause for international celebration. Special recognition should be given to you and Korea's diplomats for all of the work that was done to bring Korea to this high point. On behalf of the United States I give my heartfelt congratulations to you and the Korean people for what has been accomplished, and also for removing the looming threat of kinetic war. I can only hope that in the months to come, the United States and the united Republic of Korea will be able to increase our relations and establish a long-lasting friendship that will stand the test of time.

Best Regards,

Al Gore
President of the United States

Dear President Gore,

Thank you for your kind letter and support. The United States has been a steadfast ally of Korea and I am happy that we have grown our personal and professional relationship over the course of these past two years. The Korean people have always been a united and dignified people, a race built on common values, heritage, and identity. No amount of cultural genocide, partition, and ideological indoctrination can divide us. Like a family, even in our darkest of moments, we come back together at the dinner table to pass the bowl of rice to one another.

While the path to this day has been covered in the bloods of millions of Koreans, even in that darkness we saw the global commitment to helping our struggle. I thank you for your recognition and I know my civil servants have spent tireless nights and even at the final moment scrambled to keep everything in line. I also know that with this, we have made peace on our Peninsula secure and for the wider region. I also hope that our relationship will extend beyond the threat of North Korea, and encompass many shared dreams and visions for a better humanity into the 21st century. While we deal with new and emerging threats, our ability to overcome them will be determined by our resolve and openness to dialogue and compassion.

Please accept my deepest thanks and appreciation to you and your veterans who have for so long stood behind us. While our relationship has never been perfect, it has shown us that together we can achieve more than we can alone. While the war may be forgotten at times in history, often overshadowed by the longer wars in the region, this is not the case in Korea. We continue to remember your peoples aid and friendship during our times of need. While Korea was weak and poor, today we are stronger and prosperous. But strength and wealth hoarded is nothing more than greed. Greed which is a sin and which plagues our societies. I hope that we can in the spirit that America so often leads by, work to help our neighbors to prosper and grow stronger.

While we are still in early phase of excavation, please know that we are making sure that all 7,800 MIA American Soldiers are found and their bodies returned to the United States, With this reunification, and with maps and data from the war, we are currently looking for the remains of thousands of Korean, Americans, British, Turkish, and many other bodies of the war [1]. I hope that soon, we can begin the process and arrange for their return with full respect and honors. Please know, we will not stop until every fallen soldier, regardless their creed or allegiance is found. I hope that even if the void can not be filled from their loss, their return will put ease and calm into the hearts of their loved ones.

Signed with sincerity,
President
Kim Dae-Jung
