ENCRYPTED MESSAGE

FROM: Jackson Fitzgerald, Secretary of State of the United States of America

Secretary Ryan,

The State Department is currently reviewing a recent announcement from the Egyptian government which is titled, "Egyptian Interdiction Zone Policy For Protection Against Bad Actors & Colonialism." We have noticed that all of the island of Cyprus is included in this new policy. Because of the United Kingdom's military facilities on the island, we found this concerning. The White House is currently considering a deployment to the region in the event that regional and global tensions continue to escalate.

I have been directed to ask you if your government would like us to forward deploy any assets to your facilities in Cyprus to act as a deterrent, or if there is any assistance that we can provide at this time. I look forward to hearing back from you as soon as possible.

Best regards,

Jackson Fitzgerald

Dear Mr Fitzgerald,

We have reviewed the policy released by the Egyptian Governments and whilst it could be a productive method to reduce the threat of conflict which is naturally, something we could support... providing it was implemented correctly. However, the policy seems to indicate that those within the zone are 'free' to engage with one another without concern from Egypt; suggesting it could be taking advantage of quite comfortably.

Nonetheless, we don't consider it a threat as we're not in support of any form of the aggression methods mentioned in their policy but will be looking to have a small detachment present at RAF Akrotiri as a safety measure. Although the finer details are to be confirmed, the Ministry of Defence are considering stationing a flight of Typhoons in the area. Whilst we appreciate the offer, I don't believe additional assets would be beneficial in Cyprus at this time.

There are discussions of the Royal Navy also deploying a frigate to the region as part of a new patrol tasking, perhaps an opportunity for a joint UK-US naval patrol in the area if this is something of interest?

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Kindest Regards,
Emma Ryan

Secretary Ryan,

I understand. If the situation changes, please do not hesitate to contact my office directly. I can confirm that an American carrier strike group is currently underway to the region. While the Pentagon does intend to conduct operations in the area with the strike group, the Navy may deploy a much smaller number of assets in the region for a longer period of time (i.e. 1-3 destroyers/frigates) which could participate in a joint UK-US naval patrol as you suggested. If the Navy did this, they would need temporary fleet basing rights in Cyprus to refuel. I can confirm that the Navy would be interested in doing this with the Royal Navy.

Best regards,

Jackson Fitzgerald
