Dear High Commissioner,

As the fire situation continues to evolve in the Australian Capital Territory we have reviewed all foreign embassies and high commissions that we believe would be under threat if the fire situation moved towards the suburbs of Canberra. We have rated the Nigerian High Commission as one of the most at-risk foreign embassies due to your proximity to scrubland on the western side of Canberra. We want to take this opportunity to make sure you have a comprehensive bushfire survival plan and to make sure that you have made a decision should the high commission be put under an emergency warning, if you will evacuate or stay and defend. We also would like pre-emptive permission for ACT Fire and Rescue, the ACT Rural Fire Service, the ACT Parks and Conservation Service, the ACT State Emergency Service, the ACT Ambulance Service, the Australian Federal Police or the New South Wales Rural Fire Service to enter the embassy premises or waterbombing aircraft to drop water or other fire retardant on the premises should the fire situation begin to impact in that area. We want to reiterate that based on the situation or the operational requirements, a fire truck may not be able to attend your high commission.

Yours sincerely,
Mark Brown,
Chief Officer of the ACT Fire and Rescue.
