The Aerospace Forces of the Russian Federation (Russian: Воздушно-космические силы Союза Суверенных Государств, tr. Vozdushno-kosmicheskiye sily Russsiya Suverennykh Gosudarstv) are the aerospace forces of the Armed Forces of the USS. It was established as a new branch on 1 August 2015 with the merging of the Air Force (VVS) and the Russian Aerospace Defence Forces (VVKO) under the recommendations of the Ministry of Defence. It is headquartered in Moscow. Several reasons were announced by the Russian Defense Ministry for the merger, including greater efficiency and logistical support, as well as reduction in spending. The primary responsibilities of the Aerospace Forces are the protection and observation of the state borders via radar, combat and defense against aerial combatants and intruding objects with aerial and surface-to-air assets, and the security of occupied territories' aerospace. It is also responsible for the Union of Sovereign States' ABM network.
