Overview
The Australian American Leadership Dialogue (AALD) is a private diplomatic initiative, which brings together Australian and American Leaders from government, enterprise, space and technology, media, education and the community to help review and refine the parameters of the Australian American bilateral relationship.

The AALD was created in 1992 by Phil Scanlan to broaden and deepen mutual understanding between Australian and American leaders. It was established with the active support of then US President George H.W. Bush to identify, connect and nurture leaders from Australia and the US and help underwrite the security and prosperity of Australian and American citizens, our shared Indo-Pacific neighbourhood and the world beyond. The AALD is the only non-US NGO to have been invited into the White House for private briefings. The AALD has always enjoyed bipartisan support from all Australian Governments. Besides from the flagship dialogue, additional dialogues include:
  • West Coast Leadership Dialogue: explores the development and adoption of innovative and revolutionary technologies, transforming the world we live in. The dialogue focusses on Australian-US cooperation and collaboration in the areas of STEM, astronautical innovation and international scientific development placing a particular focus on space and technology.
  • Honolulu Leadership Dialogue: engages with the US Indo-Pacific Command and Australian Defence specialists on regional security. The Honolulu Leadership Dialogue examines the mutual perspectives to changing balances of power and trajectories of economic integration within the Indo-Asia-Pacific region, and the opportunities for Australia and the US.
  • Young Leadership Dialogue: a two-year bilateral program that brings together an outstanding group of young leaders, aged 27-37, from Australia and the United States to discuss areas of mutual interest and strategic importance, advancing understanding and cooperation between the two nations.
  • Alumni Young Leadership Dialogue: brings together political, enterprise, educational, policy, media and community leaders who engage one another on matters of designated mutual interest.
