15 May 2000 |
Dear Foreign Minister of Japan, It is with great pleasure that I reach out to you. Australia and Japan have not had a formal engagement for a long time now. This is obviously not good enough, as the two leading democracies in the Indo-Pacific I think it is vital that we do so. We share common values on many things and since the conclusion of the Second World War, sought a strong and unbreakable relationship. Trade, people-to-people links, Defence. These are all areas which we can improve on. Our relationship is vital to a free and open Indo-Pacific, something which is more important then ever with the conflict in Laos. We are working hard on the ground and with the Laos and Thai leaders to find a resolution to this conflict. We do not wish to see this spiralling any further then it needs to be. I would like to meet with you at your earliest convenience to discuss these matters. Yours sincerely, Dr. Ashton Calvert. |
