MINISTER FOR FOREIGN AFFAIRS |
SECURITY CLASSIFICATION: SECRET |
28 August 2006 |
Dear Prime Minister Kyaw, I am writing to congratulate you on your accession to power in Myanmar. The democratisation of Myanmar has long been a priority for the Australian Government. We hope that finally Myanmar can see a lasting peace and prosperity which will benefit the region. I have appointed Mrs. Bronte Moules as the Australian Ambassador to Myanmar. I am also formally inviting my counterpart in your government to visit Australia and meet with myself to discuss our bilateral relationship. The Australian Government is eager to boost its foreign aid to Pacific and South East Asian nations, to which Myanmar would be a suitable candidate. We hope to meaningfully contribute to the provision of health services and the construction of infrastructure in Myanmar. We would also like to look at ways in which we can help the Tatmadaw re-arm, in order to provide stability and security in Myanmar and to deter foreign aggressors. I look forward to hearing from you. Yours sincerely, Kevin Rudd. |
