Select Committee on Antarctica

Role:Participants:

Committee Members

  • Senator Jacinta Collins (Victoria) (Chair)
  • Senator Peter Cook (Western Australia)
  • Senator Helen Coonan (New South Wales)
  • Senator Bill O'Chee (Queensland)
  • Senator Natasha Stott Despoja (South Australia)
  • Senator Bob Brown (Tasmania)

Submitting Members

  • Ros Kelly, MP (Minister for the Environment, Sport and Territories)
  • Dr. Carmen Lawrence, MP (Minister for Foreign Affairs)
  • Dr. Rex Moncur (Director of the Australian Antarctic Division)

OOC NOTICE:

All roleplayers will be allowed to roleplay any of the Committee Members besides Senator Jacinta Collins who is the Chair and will be roleplayed by me. I will also roleplay the Submitting Members, those are the people who will be answering questions from the Senators. Please do not roleplay a Senator who is already being roleplayed by another roleplayer. Senator Peter Cook (Labor) is a Government Senator and will ask questions more in support of the Government. Senator Helen Coonan (Liberal) and Senator Bill O'Chee (National) are Opposition Senators and will ask questions in an attempt to embarass or oppose the Government. Senator Natasha Stott Despoja (Democrats) and Senator Bob Brown (Greens) are from the Crossbench. The Australian Democrats are more Centrist and believe in Social Liberalism famous for their line "keep the bastards honest", that is keep the Government and Opposition in check mainly from corruption. The Australian Greens are more further left than the Labor Party and believe strongly in Environmentalism and Green Politics, they are known for their strong stance on the Environment particularly in Tasmania but also Antarctica.

Only one question may be asked at a time.

The Committee Members would take their seats, along with members of the public, the secretary, broadcasting services and hansard services. Senator Collins would take the Chair's seat and would bang her gavel.

"This, the first session of the Senate Select Committee on Antarctica is to come to order. On the committee we have Senators Cook, Coonan, O'Chee, Stott Despoja and Brown. The scope of this Committee is to investigate and scrutinise recent actions in Antarctica which have led to 116 members of the Australian Antarctic Division to be detained along with the RSV Aurora Australis and other property belonging to the Australian Antarctic Division. It will also look at Australia's engagement with Antarctica more broadly. I invite the Honourable Ros Kelly, MP, to take the witness stand. Ms. Kelly is the current Minister for the Environment, Sport and Territories and is the Minister responsible for the Australian Antarctic Division and Australian Antarctic Affairs. I will now open the floor to questions from the Senators."

Ros Kelly would sit on the witnesses bench with her advisors either side of her including the Secretary of the Department for the Environment, Sport and Territories.
