"Hello you're through to Victoria Police, how can I help?" A tired voice bellowed through the phone. "Hello? Police! I've just heard gunshots next door!" The women frantically screamed through the phone. The operator on the other phone quickly rose from his seat as he heard the word 'gunshots' "Okay ma'am, can you please let me know the address." The operator was prepared to write the call up as soon as they could. "I live at 1..1...322 Murphy Street, ne-xt doors number 1231." The women was audibly scared of what she heard, the operator knew this and he remained calm. They could hear over the phone a baby crying in the background and whispers. The women could hear on her side of the phone, typing. "Ok, can you see anything out the window? Do you know how many people live there?" Their was a brief pause. "Hello?" The operator beckoned through the phone to the women. "Y-yes! Sorry, I can't see anything. Next door is a guy, I'm sorry I don't know his name. I-m scar-ed please." Once again their was another brief pause as typing could be heard. "Okay ma'am did you see anyone go in the house at all before this and how many gunshots you heard?" The operator questioned once more. "N-no! I think I heard two or three" She replied.
The operator sent the call through to the Dispatcher and the Control Room Inspector was made aware of what had just occurred, due to the risk of gunshots being heard. The call had to be reviewed by the Inspector first. "Okay ma'am, the Police will be on their way. Please stay inside." The call had ended.

It was only three minutes since the call had ended. Two Victorian Police Holden Commodores raced down Murphy Street from either side. Both cars quickly screeched to halt outside 1231 Murphy Street, their red and blues lights flashed all around the once quiet neighborhood. It very soon alerted the neighbours who can peeking through the windows at was going on. In the first vehicle was Constable Gavin and Holloway, whilst the second featured Senior Constable Tyler and Constable Dennis. Victoria Police were still wary after the 88' Walsh Street Police shootings which took two of their own. All four officers quickly withdrew their sidearms which was Smith & Wesson revolver as they quickly surrounded the house. Tyler signaled to Gavin and Holloway to go through the front whilst himself and Dennis was to take the back. They quickly moved as they could as Tyler and Dennis scaled the fence into the backyard and lined up near the door. Once both sides were covered, Gavin and Holloway quickly noticed the front door was open still and radioed it in silently to their colleagues at the back. In they went as Gavin and Holloway creeped the front door quietly as possible, whilst Tyler and Dennis found the backyard door was also unlocked.

'Police, entering the building! Show yourselves..."

Silence echoed through the home.

"Police!"
"Police.."

Silence once again echoed through the home.

The home was tidy and neat. Gavin thought straight away, this was not a ordinary burglary that has gone wrong. The home was big and had multiple rooms, it was long before all four Constables met each other in the hallway. Tyler signaled to Gavin and Holloway to make way upstairs whilst himself and Dennis continued finishing the other rooms. As more rooms were cleared, the home was still tidy. They didn't see anyone inside or nor did they see any bullet holes anywhere. As they cleared the last room, Dennis moved out to the hallway. "Got a door..." He whispered to Tyler. Gavin and Holloway also came down the stairs as they finished clearing upstairs. Tyler nodded and Dennis huddled behind himin a line. Tyler was first and he tried to door, it was open. He peeked inside once he had opened the door. He then looked behind. "Basement." Tyler and Dennis then moved into the basement quietly as possible whilst Gavin and Holloway remained upstairs. As they moved down the stairs one by one, the footsteps of the two officers could easily be heard. As they got lower and lower, they saw bare feet on the ground, followed by a whole body. Blood has splattered all over the wall and soaked the basement floor completely. As the two officers looked around with their revolvers aimed high. They moved closer towards the body. Tyler instantly recognized who it was.

It was Sonny Benevueto. The leader of Honoured Society and one of the Melbournes biggest underworld leaders.

Hampton Park, Melbourne
0803hrs

The Honoured Society was a Calabrian 'Ndrangheta group that was created all the way back in the 60s by Frank Benevueto. The father of Sonny. They had been long involved in Melbournes underworld and linked to controlling Melbournes fruit and vegetable market. Victoria Police established the Honoured Society as Melbournes top group that was linked with all types of crime in the city. Sonny's second in command Gianfranco Condello was seen as the man by Victoria Police who was the brains of the operation. Gianfranco was 46 years old, unhealthy and overweight. His girlfriend of 6 years had always complained that Condello needed to lose weight. He hated the amount of moaning that had occurred from his girl and ignored it for months, however secretly he knew she was right. A doctors checkup had led to Condello being told he was on his way to diabetes if he didn't start losing weight and eating right. Condello was prolific fast food eater and always avoided healthy eating. He didn't care about exercise, exercise to him was him walking around Melbourne doing his daily work for the Honoured Society. A health scare however changed it all for Condello, he knew straight away the doctor and his girlfriend was right. He needed to change and fast.

Condello had only began his new rigorous training routine in the past two weeks. He had ditched fast food and exercised on a regular. He lived around the corner from the River Gum Creek and it was perfect place for him to do jogging each time. Condello had woke up just fifteen minutes earlier for his daily jog, it was bright and sunny but at the same time a cold draft blew through Melbourne. His girlfriend was still fast asleep. He did his usual routine of brushing his teeth, drinking some orange juice and healthy cereal before he placed on of his new Adidas Originals tracksuits. This one was his favourite, it was bright blue however he liked the look of it. As he opened the front door, he swiftly left his front porch. He shivered a little but took in a deep breath in and out, closing the front door behind him as he began his jog. He took his usual route to the Creek, avoiding any roads on the way there and he began his jog. Condello had aimed to jog for three miles around the creek this morning, aiming his target by the end month to be five miles. He smiled as he entered the creek through Henley Place.

His heart was pumping already, Condello knew he was overweight but wanted to continue on track for his target. He looked around him and saw people on bicycles and also doing jogging like him. He continued further and further down the reserve. He avoided the waters, keeping close to the grasslands. One male along the way laughed at him. Bellowing under his breath. "Fatboy." Condello looked him scornfully, wanting to turn around and punch him. But he avoided the male and continued on.

It was six minutes into his jog as he approached underneath a small bridge next to a riverbed. At this point, Condello was sweating profusely and sweat patches has marked all over his Adidas tracksuit. He stopped just as he approached the hole underneath the bridge to take a breath. He went over to a riverbed to wash his face. As he knelt over to breathe he looked to the floor as sweat poured down onto the ground. He was heavily breathing and he was to trying to catch his breath. "Gotta keep going... gotta keep going." He said under his breath. He got back up looking up. A barrel of semi automatic handgun with a silencer was in his face. Condello eyes widen as he looked at a stocky male that was wearing all black and his face was covered completely by a balaclava. Condello took a big gulp, he didn't want to die here. It was a few seconds after he realised what happened and Condello wondered why the trigger had not been pulled. He was quickly thinking. "Go for his gun."

"Go for his gun." His mind repeated.

As Condello was to go for this action, a simple thud was heard. Condello was struck with sharp pain, as he fell to the floor. He looked up.

Three more thuds were heard as Condello life has just ended in a instant. Blood had quickly poured all around the floor and was leaking into the riverbed. The balaclava clad man ran in the direction where he appeared from. Entering an awaiting car, disappearing before the body was discovered.

Newport, Melbourne
Three weeks since the double murder
1103hrs
It was exactly three (IC) weeks since the double murder of the Honoured Society's top two figures. It had crumbled the group, very quickly and swiftly. Money was quickly lost, territory was being captured by their enemies and the worst of all family was not there anymore.
For Frank Benevueto, the loss of his son Sonny was a very crucial hit for him. A hit for his health, a hit for his marriage and a hit for his health. The 65 year old was aging quickly, he had arthritis in his left hand and his knees were worn out. Known as 'Mad Frankie' he ruled over Melbourne with a tight iron fist many would say since 1961. Benevueto was born in October 1932 in Reggio Calbria, Southwest Italy. Benevueto and his family grew up in a region where the 'Ndrangheta groups originated from. During the years of the Second World War. Frank's father secretly fought under the Italian Resistance Movement until he was captured in late 1944 where he was executed by Mussolins fascists for treason. His father was a well known 'Ndrangheta member and it was known that Mussolins fascists took a serious dislike on organised criminal groups in Italy hence why the Mafia helped America gain intelligence on the movements of Nazi Germany and Italian troops months before the invasion of Sicily. After the execution of his dad, Frank and the rest of the family swiftly escaped to different countries. First United Kingdom, then the States and then last not but least Melbourne, Australia. After the war, Melbourne took a very serious rise in Organised Crime. Mainly due to the Unions on the docks and the transportation of illegal drugs into the city it wasn't long till Frank Benevueto took over what he thought was his.
After the Honoured Society was created, Benevueto quickly took over Melbournes underworld. All of his rivals were either dead or missing. The Society which was an all Calabrian 'Ndrangheta group didn't directly get involved in their crimes, it was always distributed those that worked under the group. Hence why Victoria Police failed to charge Frank. He was cunning and clever, he even bought out many officers too.
Frank retired from 'the life' in 1994 as his age played a very big factor. His second eldest son Sonny grew fond of the way his father had lived as he grew up. He wanted to follow his footsteps, but Frank wanted him to live straight. Sonny persisted and persisted and his family eventually gave in. He rose through the ranks and he was a quick money earner for the Society and it wasn't long he took the reins off his dad. Sonny knew he had to follow his dads legacy, he did. He continued to earn money for the group and was powerful just like his dad once was.

But that power eventually led to his death and a major part of Frank Benevuetos life to be taken away from him.

Frank had sat in his home in Newport for the past three weeks in his own. He sat in his armchair, staring blankly ahead of him and kept his right hand around a whisky glass each day. Today was one of those days again. Benevueto sat in his armchair in his robe, white vest and pyjama shorts. The house far too quiet. His wife and the rest of the kids had left him. His two daughters and his other son followed their mother after a big argument was caused with the wife blaming Frank for the death of their son. Frank knew they were right, he was to be blamed but it led to a massive mental breakdown for him which left him sat in his armchair for days since the murders. He took Condellos death hard as well, as Condello was a close friend for Frank.

He took a sip of his whiskey once again. The clock tick was the only thing in the house that made a noise in the house, followed by his eventual sips of his whisky. The whisky he poured this time round was scotch. Gianfranco's favourite. Frank's unkempt white beard bristled through the dark living room. Even though there was light, the curtains were still drawn.

He took a heavy deep breath out and then followed another sip of his whisky. One eye peeked towards the clock. 11:15.

Another heavy deep breath out, Frank took a big sip of his whisky as he laid out the empty glass and bottle out on the table. He got up, stretching. Their was significant pain in his right knee but he ignored it. He grudgingly walked up the stairs, brushing his teeth and tidying up his unkempt beard. He swiftly put on a dark grey shirt followed by placing on his dark black suit. He'd follow by placing on his gold watch, he looked at the time 11:34. He then looked towards two rings that laid across the table. One was Frank's wedding ring, the other was Sonny's favourite. He stared blankly for a few seconds at both of them, before he placed both of them on the designated fingers. He wanted to stay proud of his family and his son. As time went on, he rushed down the stairs. He looked around his home once more. Having a small quick flashbacks of times with his family. Happier times he thought. He walked through each room, wanting to pass the time more and more to avoid attending a special occasion. But he knew it had to be done.

A 'sitdown' was called and was about to be held with all of the top members of the Honoured Society. The decision that was going to be made was all out war with another smaller 'Ndrangheta gang called the Carlton Crew and their allies.

They were responsible for the murder of Sonny Benevueto and Gianfranco Condello.

Docklands, Melbourne
New Years Eve
22:53hrs
Cheers lay through the streets of Melbourne. It was nearly time to welcome the New Year here in Australia. The streets bubbled with life as many partygoers were out on the streets ready to welcome in the New Year. It was one of those times were Melbournes nightlife was always packed and busy.
In one of the most popular nightclubs, Club Shawlands the purple neon bristled through the night sky. It was midly chilly, however it didn't put off for those getting ready to welcome 1998.

"Ooooh yeaaahhh baby!" Shouted one male. Loud cheers would follow in the Club as a male stripped down pants and shoes only raced through the club laughing. He was clearly, far too intoxicated. Sash! - Ecuador echoed through the speakers through the club. The Club was packed and everyone was getting ready for a night to remember. The intoxicated male ran towards the far end of the nightclub where the VIPs were. Barging past everyone he could.

"Hey watch where you fuckin' running eh!"
"Watch it!"

The male stopped, heavy breathing followed as he made another dash around the VIP part of the club. Until he fell. He was tripped.

"Heyeh budd-" The male looked up and he quickly knew he was in a bad situation.

The male he just bumped into was a large stocky male. He was clearly not happy with what had just had come along.

"So..sosoos..sorry" The male made a quick dash from the male he quickly angered. The stockier type of male made one step forward.

"Leave it." The stocky male turned to his table and he perked his eyes on a dark haired male sat in the middle drinking away. "Sit down Bruno." The male ordered in a calmer tone. Bruno sighed, nodding and sitting down in a orderly fashion. The male who had just ordered was Carlo Grimaldo. A very well known mobster in the Melbourne Underworld and was one of the key players of the Carlton Crew. Carlo was a very well known money launderer and even worse loansharker. Bruno was just one of the low level members of the Crew and was looking after his boss, Carlo.

He took a breathe in of one of his cigars. Carlo was a short male however he was also stocky and brisk. He was turning 36 next year however he knew he had his younger years still in him. He dusted off his $1300 black and cream suit he wore for this occasion. Next to him sat one of his many mistresses Anna. Her blond hair curled up and her face covered in makeup, though her figure made her stand out for pretty she was. Even though Carlo was married with two children, he didn't care. He wasn't very attractive himself but he always knew women were gold diggers. He had lied to his family stating he had to work later and would be back in time for the countdown, but really.. he wasn't.

"Two more years until a new century." a smirk followed from Carlo. Carlo's horseshoe mustache bristled through the club. He laughed as he took another shot of vodka, it was coming clear to a point that Carlo was becoming slowly more and more intoxicated.
The DJ twisted onto his next record - Strike - You Sure Do. A song that Carlo loves. "Come on baby." He smiled however frowning his eyebrows at the same time. Anna giggling away as she was led to the dance floor with Carlo.

"You sure make me feeeel like loving yooou." Victoria's Newtons voice beamed through the speakers through the club. An Australian herself, she was the lead vocalist for the British DJ group strike.

The dance floor was becoming slowly packed as partygoers danced along with the song. Some in the club were singing along with the song. Carlo who was a favourite of the song mimicked every part of the lyric as he gingerly danced along with Anna. As the beat dropped he continued to dance gingerly, but at the same time his eyes beamed on another woman. She was pretty. Her brunette hair swaying back and forth as she danced. She was wearing a chrome coloured top and jeans. She noticed Carlo was looking at him and she smiled. She also raised an eyebrow.
But before he could make an approach, Anna snapped him out of it.

"Carlo... are you listening?" Anna remarked.

Carlo nodded as he continued to dance gingerly. The brunette disappeared as Carlo tried to look back to find her. He sighed. Before continuing to dance. Bruno had walked over and he handed his boss another vodka in which Carlo downed rather quickly.

2358hrs
"AWRIGHT CLUB SHAWLANDSSSS! WE'RE GOING TO WELCOME THE NEW YEAR IN STYLE." Carlo looked up to the speakers as a large group of people made way to the dance floor. Bruno very quickly became separated from Carlo, however Carlo and Anna didn't notice as they were too busy getting along with the rest of the partygoers to welcome 1998. Cheers laid through the club "ARE YOU READY CLUB SHAWLANDS...LETS BEGIN THE COUNTDOWN..."

"HAPPY NEW YEAR!" A large swathe of voices echoed through the club, followed by cheers and alcohol beverages being dashed in the air.

"Till I come..." The beginning of 9pm - ATB began to play through the Club speakers.

"Ohohohooo..." Carlo remarked. Another one of his favourite dance songs. He began to cheer and he further began to dance gingerly with Anna in tow. Carlo was stumbling at the same time and accidentally falling into people as the dance floor was packed with people.

The guitar of the ATB song echoed through the club speakers.

The song was in the build up to the main beat. Carlo was getting ready for it, however he felt a tap on his shoulder. "Bruno waddya fuckin want?"

"Carlo Grimaldo?" a voice asked.

"Yeah who the fuck is askin?" He stated in a harsh tone as he turned around, he was annoyed that he just got interrupted.

He turned to see the brunette woman from earlier. She stood next to another male wearing all black. Carlo got one quick look at his face and he clearly knew he was trouble. The males face was disfigured slightly and Carlo knew he must be in his 40s.

The male pulled out a 9mm handgun and aimed it into the face of Carlo. Carlo took one look at the brunette lady as she smiled the same way just an hour earlier.

"Mr Benevueto sends his regards." remarked the male.
