The campaign would get into full swing. There would be corflutes put all up around Canberra, including in the Embassy district. The leaders of the parties would be out campaigning and would begin knocking on Embassy doors across the suburb of Yarralumla where most of the Embassies were based. They would ask if there was any Australian citizens working within the Embassies who would be able to vote at the ACT election.

The Katy Gallagher Labor team would visit the Israeli Embassy and would ring the bell.

"Hello we're from the Labor team. We're wondering if there are any Australian citizens working in your embassy who may be eligible to vote at the ACT election?"

The Kate Carnell Liberal team would visit the UK Embassy and would ring the bell.

"Hello we're from the Canberra Liberals. Are there any Australian citizens there who would like to hear more about our policies at the upcoming ACT election?"

The ACT Labor Party today formally launches its campaign to win control of the Legislative Assembly after six years in opposition. Labor leader Katy Gallagher says the party has the right mix of policies and commitment and is ready to govern. Among the new initiatives to be announced today is a plan to establish a new advisory group, Business Canberra, to refocus economic development strategies. Ms. Gallagher says Can-Trade is not delivering the goods. "We need to refocus it, we need to give it some teeth, we need to actually ask it to implement a strategy that acknowledges all our strengths," she said. Labor's jobs policy will also be unveiled today, with employment incentives for small business owners to take on at least one extra staff member. But Ms. Gallagher says costings will not be released until after the policy roll-out concludes. "When we do release those on Monday we will see the extent to which the Liberals have run an appalling and I think dishonest campaign," she said.

The ACT Liberal Party will launch its education policy today promising initiatives worth almost $5 million. The Government has pledged to reduce class sizes and improve vocational training. The Education Minister, Bill Stefaniak, says there is a number of initiatives he is yet to announce. "I've been delighted to see despite difficult financial times each year the education budget go up and now that we are in a small surplus we are able to do some further initiatives and I think that's good news for the 60,000 students in the Territory," Mr Stefaniak said.

The ACT Greens has rejected a Government plan to establish a boys only high school. The Education Minister, Bill Stefaniak, yesterday announced the Government would offer $500,000 to any public school willing to make the switch to single sex education. Greens MLA and chair of the Legislative Assembly's education committee, Kerry Tucker, says it is a simplistic approach to a complex issue. "Some boys are not being properly supported in our system," Ms Tucker said. "It's about connection with adults, it's about providing a curriculum that works for them, it's about understanding. "To suggest that we need to just have a boys only school to deal with these issues is not taking into account the reality of what's happening in the schools."
