Subject: ANZAC Frigate Export

Good morning Minister Crean,

The ANZAC-class frigate was jointly developed by Australia and New Zealand. As such, both countries need to give permission for it to be exported to any other country. I am contacting you to arrange for a discussion about the potential export of the ANZAC frigate to Canada, in response to their recently-issued tender for a new frigate.

Please, inform me what your ideas are around this topic and if Australia would be willing to approve an export of the vessel.

Thank you,

Hon. Mark Bhurton, Minister of Defence

Dear Minister Bhurton,

In consultation with the Minister for Defence and the Defence Export Controls Branch of the Department of Defence, we have made the determination that we will allow for the Australian-registered company Tenix (who is regulated by the Defence Export Controls Branch) to export the Anzac-class Frigate to the Canadian Government under the Defence Trade Controls Act, with the vessels to be constructed at Tenix shipyards in New Zealand.

Yours sincerely,
Greg Combet.
