The United States Department of Defense, commonly called "The Defense Department", includes the departments which contain the armed forces, such as the "The Department of The Air Force". The only exception to this is the Coast Guard, which is under the Department of Homeland Security during peace times, but can be moved under the Department of The Navy (and thus Defense) by order of the President. The Department of Defense is responsible for maintaining and organizing the armed forces, and is a critical element of civilian control of the American military.
