The Department of State is the federal department of the United States Federal Government that is responsible for establishing and maintaining foreign relations on behalf of the American people, as well as operating diplomatic missions around the world, and ensuring the safety of Americans abroad. The department is colloquially known as "The State Department" and is lead by the Secretary of State, who is a member of the President's Cabinet and is considered to be one of the most important unelected positions in the Federal Government. The State Department is dedicated to ensuring the national security of the United States through diplomacy and peaceful resolutions before other options are considered.​

FLAG OF THE DEPARTMENT OF STATE

The flag of the Department of State is flown at State Department facilities and also used inside for meetings and official press briefings. The flag is also used to sometimes represent members of the State Department of officials of the federal government who are acting in a diplomatic capacity, such as the Secretary of State, ambassadors, and special diplomats.​

HARRY S. TRUMAN BUILDING

The Harry S. Truman Building is the headquarters of the Department of State. The building's address is 2201 C St NW, Washington, DC 20520 which is in the Foggy Bottom neighborhood of Washington D.C. The building houses the offices of the Secretary of State, the Deputy Secretary of State, and hundreds of other personnel who assist in operating the department.​

JACKSON FITZGERALD​

Jackson Fitzgerald was only recently confirmed by the Senate as the Secretary of State in January, shortly before the State of The Union attack in February of 1997. Fitzgerald was a friend of then-Vice President Al Gore and had previously served in the State Department's Diplomatic Corps. The Secretary attended Harvard and graduated at the top of his class with a degree in International Relations. He has a reputation for making sure that his voice his heard and generally able to function well in intense situations.​
