The Government of the Arab Republic of Egypt announced today the instatement of a temporary regulation system regarding the usage of the waterways involved in the traffic in and out of the Suez Canal, one of the most important waterways in global maritime commerce. The Suez Canal represents a key asset for the egyptian economy and for all egyptians, and it is the understanding of the recently elected Government that its tariffs and regulations should be readequated to better suit the interests of the egyptian people. The increasing traffic and generated delays also play an important part in the decision of the Government to regulate the access. During the term of the announced system, all foreign nations (civiliand and military vessels) or companies that wish to use the egyptian Suez Canal waterways have to obtain a permit granted by the national Government. Said permit may carry a cost and certain restrictions. As soon as the definitive system is designed, it will be made public. |
