The Government of the Arab Republic of Egypt announced today the instatement of a temporary regulation system regarding the usage of the waterways involved in the traffic in and out of the Suez Canal, one of the most important waterways in global maritime commerce.

The Suez Canal represents a key asset for the egyptian economy and for all egyptians, and it is the understanding of the recently elected Government that its tariffs and regulations should be readequated to better suit the interests of the egyptian people. The increasing traffic and generated delays also play an important part in the decision of the Government to regulate the access.

During the term of the announced system, all foreign nations (civiliand and military vessels) or companies that wish to use the egyptian Suez Canal waterways have to obtain a permit granted by the national Government. Said permit may carry a cost and certain restrictions.

As soon as the definitive system is designed, it will be made public.

The US Ambassador to Egypt, Edward Walker Jr. would inform the Egyptian government that the Suez Canal is actually owned by the Suez Canal Company, which (as per MN rules) is an independent entity which can form its own rules and regulated regarding the Suez canal, and any forced rules by the Egyptian Government would be infringing on the rights of the company.

The US ambassador would politely be informed that he is correct, but the waterways leading to and from it the Suez Canal itself are on egyptian territorial waters, and subject to egyptian authority.

The Syrian government would commend Egypt's steadfast commitment to preserving it's national sovereignty by taking into account the needs and desires of their own people rather than capitulating to western interests at the expense of their own economy and self respect.
