[ETH] PM's Inauguration and speech

As dictated by the 1994 National Constitution, part of the political-electoral process includes the ceremonial inauguration of the new Prime Minister, His Excellency Abiy Ahmed. The event will be held in the National Congress and broadcasted to the entire nation as well as to repeater stations abroad. It is also expected that in addition to the official designation of Prime Minsiter Abiy, the new Head of State will take the oath of the new members of the Ministerial Council, his cabinet, followed by his opening speech where he will detail the goals and main policies and ideas of his government. A large crowd is expected to accompany the PM and attend the event in the outskirts of the Congress. Several political and cultural figures have also been invited to be part of this ceremony as special guests in the interior of the parliamentary building. The international community in Addis Ababa has also been invited to be part of the event through their ambassadors. Finally, it has been rumoured that PM Ahmed also extended invitations to fellow african Heads of State to accompany him in the event and eventually have some personal talks. The National Congress in Addis Ababa had been decorated with multiple flags and emblems, bearing the colors and symbols of the Republic of Ethiopia. The area was also secured and controlled by a big deployment of police officers, creating areas for the crowd to witness the PM's inauguration and follow what is going to happen inside the historical building through but TV screens.​

Inside the big legislative building, everything was prepared and shining for this big ceremony. The special guests would start to arrive and take their seats. Legislators, governors, celebrities, officials and foreign representatives would arrive and wait for everything to start.​

​

At 11am, the police blocking the vehicular access to the main plaza would be radioed informing that PM's Ahmed's motorcade was on his way. Few minutes afterwards, the group of black cars would pull up the street and enter into the restricted area, parking right next to the main hall of the Congress. The PM could be seen waving from inside the card to the people that gathered.​

He would enter the building and be greeted by the President of the body of legislators, and escorted to a waiting room until everything was ready for the ceremony to start.​

The PM would enter the hall through a door behind the chairman’s desk, where he would be received by members of the parliament and different political parties. After taking the oath and receiving the attributes of the Head of State, he would take the microphone and start his first public address as the Prime Minister of the Federal Republic of Ethiopia.​

"Members of the congress, ministers, foreign dignitaries and representatives, ladies and gentleman, fellow ethiopians, I would like to thank you today for accompanying me in this historic transition, and for the trust vested in me few weeks ago in the election that allowed me to take this position of honor and servitude to this great country.​

​

We gather today not to celebrate a new Head of State, but to mark the beginning of a new, prosperous and invigorating, era of growth and progress for Ethiopia.​

​

Our nation has endured for centuries, and the industriousness of our people has proven time and time again that when we work together for a goal, we can achieve great things. Our nation is vast in territory and rich in resources, blessed with the plentifulness of the african savannah and its mountains and rainforests.​

​

This untapped potential has been laying there for far too long untouched and misused due to the lack of real long term planning. This absence has hindered the development of our nation in economic and social terms. A strong economy can support a strong society, with access to health, education and safety. We cannot have these without a serious plan to create and produce.​

​

This, my fellow countrymen, will be the leitmotiv of my Government. We will sit down with all sectors in ethiopian society and politics and design a real, long term plan that will include the policies and the agreements necessary to bring Ethiopia to the 21st century.​

​

As soon as this ceremony is over, we will start working with my trusted cabinet of ministers on the programs and projects necessary to kick- off this, hopefully, story of success.​

​

It is key that we develop our network of infrastructure to provide a better logistical panorama to connect our most productive regions, in agriculture and mining, with our manufacturing and processing areas near our cities. A vast, modern and efficient network of railway will allow this to happen, reducing transport costs and time, saving money and thus allowing for more investments and the creation of jobs in the private sector, ultimately increasing our nation’s exports and income.​

​

But this network has to be accompanied by other elements, such as the industrial parks to process all this resources and add value to what we ethiopians produce and both, consume internally as well as offer to the international market. Adding value to our goods should be a priority, why export copper if we can use it to build chips and wires, creating jobs and revenue and exporting them at a higher value?​

​

Obviously, we cannot also only rely on the spoils of our rich land, and we are thankful for the unique natural environment Ethiopia has to offer. Tourism and the service area will also be a leading sector in the Ethiopia of tomorrow. We have planned a major investment plan to boost our tourism sector by providing better facilities, training and a more modern approach on conservation and environmental protection.​

​

Our National Parks will grow to fully exploit its potential while also preserving its pristine condition, and will be fueled by new hotels, access and a national air carrier to connect our country to the world.​

​

This expected economic growth will immediately be reinvested in our society. It is the duty of the national government to provide education and health for all through our public services plan. We will be working closely with provincial authorities to expand and modernize our health and education facilities, providing more efficient services, of a higher quality.​

​

These are only but few of the projects we have on hand and currently studying.​

​

Obviously, Ethiopia is not an island in today’s worlds, and diplomacy and international trade will also be key to consolidate our progress. My government will maintain a fluent dialogue with all like-minded nations, who like us seek prosperity for their people. This includes a strong emphasis in Africa. We will work with fellow african government to discuss the best possible strategies to achieve this long-term success.​

​

And as a start for this african approach, we have first to settle our remaining conflicts. Useless conflicts in an interconnected world, such as our dispute with Eritrea. While my Government adheres to the signed treaties, recognizing the existence of this country as an independent state, we still haven’t defined the exact borders. We are willing to sit down and negotiate, making concessions if necessary, but with the goal to represent Ethiopia's best interests, and those are today to guarantee an access to the world’s main economic trade routes, out at sea. My Government will be soon contacting our Eritrean counterparts to settle this dispute, peacefully.​

To sum up, my Government will be one of dialogue, consensus and growth. I invite everyone here, and outside this beautiful building, to work with me to achieve this goal, the goal of a modern, rich and inclusive Ethiopia.​
