Welcome to ENC, I am Nyala Abay and today we will be covering a rather interesting movement that has been popping up in the wake of the many free speech reforms that has resulted in PM Zenawi’s recent election. Many really small groups throughout every region of the nation. Everywhere from Somali to Amhara, this extreme and still relatively small movement has divisions. Currently only being made up of 1500 Ethiopians, but the leader named Abiy Abebe hopes for it to grow exponentially in the upcoming years.”

“The movement, named the National Union Party, is relatively small in scope. While it’s beliefs are controversial, it’s clearly making connections with a lot of the population, who still live in immense poverty. Though the party is still relatively new to the populous, it’s still growing through public speeches and many advertisements that are marked with the party symbol, which seems to be four tally marks with a line striker through it. We asked Abiy what this meant to the party and he said this.”

The camera switches to an interview with Abiy in a small building, which seems to be the party headquarters. There’s a group of around 100 men working and discussing the future of the party.
He is translated from Amharic. “The symbol of our party represents the unity of our people. The tally marks are the people of Ethiopia. Normally separated by the borders of this country, we decided that’s what was leading to our downfall. The cross line is our party. The people who will unite this country to one great union of people. We are still in the beginning stages of formation, but we are working to grow this party and help it succeed. With the release of our new novel I think we will blow up in membership. It’s an exciting future for Ethiopia as a whole.”

Back to the news room, Nyala proceeds to speak.
“The rise of these Nationalist movements in Ethiopia is a rare site indeed, we’ve never really seen one at this magnitude before. However with the release of their new novel named “Hizibachini,” the party is expected to grow much more later this year. However they do have along way to go as one thousand members isn’t even a dent in the elections. Thank you for watching this edition of ENC, I am Nyala Abay. Thank you.
