The Global Assembly announced today with great sorrow the passing of Secretary-General Clark Stone. Mr. Stone passed away peacefully at the age of 74.
In response to the sudden vacancy, the Assembly has been convoked to discuss the appointment of Deputy Secretary-General Han Dae-Jung as Acting Secretary-General. Mr. Han is expected to oversee the orderly transition and guide the election process for a new Secretary-General.
The selection of a new Secretary-General will be crucial in re-igniting the Organisation’s momentum and addressing the diverse and complex challenges facing the world. The Member States will be invited to nominate candidates
The Organisation has declared a week of mourning, during which its flag will fly at half-mast at all official GA buildings.
Global Assembly concludes election of principal positions
During the 1st plenary meeting of the 10th session, the Assembly has elected Ms. Édith Jeanne Thérèse Cresson as the new Secretary-General of the Global Assembly. A French national with a distinguished career in politics, Ms Cresson has held various positions at the local, national, and European levels. In her vision statement, she highlighted her commitment to combating global terrorism, fostering dialogue on fair and inclusive climate agreements, and organising summits to address escalating multilateral tensions.
Additionally, Mr Shashi Tharoor has been elected Deputy Secretary-General, a role in which he will also serve ex officio as President of the Assembly. With an extensive diplomatic background, Mr. Tharoor has previously held posts in Geneva and New York, representing India in key international discussions.
Mr Han Dae-Jung, who served as Deputy Secretary-General and oversaw the elections, has commended the election of the new leadership and urged unified support to advance the Global Assembly's agenda for peace and prosperity. He officially handed over the Assembly's gavel to Mr Tharoor, symbolising the start of a new chapter for the organisation.
The Assembly will reconvene on the second Tuesday of September for the general debate, providing the Secretary-General, Deputy Secretary-General, and heads of state and government (or their permanent representatives) the opportunity to address the Assembly and outline their priorities for the 11th session.
