The Global Assembly, established in 1995 as the successor to the United Nations, is an international organisation dedicated to global peace and security. The Assembly serves as a forum for addressing complex global challenges and unites member states committed to its Charter. By promoting dialogue on peacekeeping, diplomacy, and development, we work to reduce conflict and foster global understanding. Our mission is to advocate for peaceful approaches to protect human lives and dignity, showing the world that alternatives to war, conflict, and violence are both possible and essential. | ![]() |
PRINCIPAL ORGANS
THE ASSEMBLY | The Assembly is the main deliberative, policymaking and representative organ of the GA. All Member States of the GA are represented in the Assembly. Each year, in September, the full GA membership meets in the Assembly Hall in The Hague for the start of the annual General Assembly session, where heads of state or government may address the Assembly. Decisions on important questions, such as those on peace and security, admission of new members and budgetary matters, require a two-thirds majority of the Assembly. Decisions on other questions are by simple majority. The Assembly is presided over by the Deputy Secretary-General. |
THE SECRETARIAT | The Secretariat comprises the Secretary-General and their international staff who carry out the day-to-day work of the GA as mandated by the Assembly. The Secretary-General is Chief Administrative Officer of the Organisation. |
THE INTERNATIONAL COURT OF JUSTICE | The International Court of Justice is the principal judicial organ of the Global Assembly. Its seat is at the Peace Palace in the Hague. The Court’s role is to settle, in accordance with international law, legal disputes of state, criminal, or commercial nature. The Court further provides advisory opinions on legal questions referred to it by authorised Global Assembly organs and specialised agencies. The International Court of Justice functions in accordance with its Statute. |
SECRETARY-GENERAL
Equal parts diplomat and advocate, civil servant and CEO, the Secretary-General embodies the ideals of the Global Assembly and serves as a spokesperson for the world's peoples, particularly the most vulnerable. The Charter defines the Secretary-General as the "chief administrative officer" of the Organisation, responsible for carrying out duties assigned by the Assembly and other Global Assembly organs. It also grants the Secretary-General the authority to bring to the Assembly's attention any issue they believe may threaten international peace and security. These guidelines outline the powers of the office while allowing considerable flexibility for action. The Secretary-General must balance the concerns of Member States with the duty to uphold the principles and moral authority of the Global Assembly, speaking and acting for peace. | ![]() ____________________________________________________ Édith Jeanne Thérèse CRESSON Secretary-General |
SECRETARIAT
The Global Assembly Secretariat carries out the day-to-day work of the GA as mandated by the Assembly and the Organisation's other main organs. The Secretary-General is the head of the Secretariat. The Secretariat is organised along departmental lines, with each department or office having a distinct area of action and responsibility. Offices and departments coordinate with each other to ensure cohesion in the GA's programme of work. Much of the Secretariat is located at the GA Campus in The Hague, Netherlands.
