Urgent Statement on Haiti
Type: Statement

Minister of Defence Siobhan Richmond takes to the dispatch box of the house of commons.

"Mr Speaker, I wish to provide a brief update in regards to the Canadian lead intervention in Haiti. Whilst on routine patrol in the Caribbean, the Canadian Carrier Strike Group were diverted to assist the Haitian authorities dealing with the largest earthquake in their countries history. The forces unfortunately discovered the current President, his cabinet and many senior official's within the government were killed during the earthquake.

At the invitation of the temporary authorities in Haiti, our forces have come to shore and begun the process of delivering aid to those in need. Our forces are providing much needed security to aid deliveries across the island. It is the decision of this government that our forces will remain on the island until elections of a new Haiti government can be held, the government restored and aid has been allowed to reach all areas in Haiti.

Marine Commandos have come under fire in one particular area of the capital. As such, I have authorised the marines to clear, secure and protect the area and it's people. Marines will remain on the area for the next few months, before being replaced by a brigade sized force from the Canadian Army. We continue to work closely with the Haitian people and will do all we can to return a functioning government to the island"
