Inauguration Day
January '03
January '03
The bands and crowds roared across Baghdad's skyline as the President of the Republic of Iraq took to the stage outside of the Iraqi Parliament. Vice President Karim Rahal, Senators, governors and distinguished guests took their places on a Dias overlooking the parliament building. The anthem was sung and acts hand chosen by the President entertained the crowds that had gathered.
Finally, it was time to inaugurate Salim Tawfeek as the 6th President of Iraq, but the 1st of the new Iraqi Constitution. A constitution based on the American system, giving total separation of powers. The President would be the head of the executive, a chosen speaker of the house and senates as respective heads of the legislature and a Chief Justice to be appointed to head up the Supreme Court.
"swear by God Almighty to carry out my legal duties and responsibilities with devotion and integrity and preserve the independence and sovereignty of Iraq, and safeguard the interests of its people, and ensure the safety of its land, sky, water, wealth, and federal democratic system, and I shall endeavour to protect public and private liberties, the independence of the judiciary, and pledge to implement legislation faithfully and neutrally. God is my witness" President Tawfeek repeats after a supreme court justice, his hand pressed against the Quran as the other is raised in the air."
As the President, finished his Oath. An explosion ripped through the crowd before. Iraqi protection officer's sprung into action ripping the President, the Vice President and the incoming speakers of the house off the stage. President Tawfeek could only catch a glance of the chaos unfolding off the stage before he was manhandled of the stage.
Tikirt, Northern Iraq.
At the administration centre of Tikirt, Saddam Husseins supporters begun to gather outside the main building. Police officers in dysfunctional riot gear stood guard. However, they're ability to hold the building agaisnt the baying mob with thier cheap and corrupt riot equipment was questionable. The crowd demanded the resignation of the Governor and the installation of Saddam as President of Iraq.
