OFFICE OF THE PRIME MINISTER OF ISRAEL |
PRIVATE AND CLASSIFIED |
Recipient: Mohammad Khatami, President of the Islamic Republic of Iran I would like to offer my congratulations on your election as President of your country and I would like to extend a further congratulations to your Ministers on their appointments and on the basis of peace and prosperity between our two countries, I am reaching out today to extend an invitation to yourself to visit the State of Israel on a date of your choosing. Historically, Iran was the second Muslim-majority country to recognise Israel as a sovereign state after Turkey. After the 1953 coup d'état, which reinstalled the pro-Western leader Mohammad Reza Pahlavi as the Shah of Iran. It was until after the 1979 Islamic Revolution, Iran severed all diplomatic and commercial ties with the State of Israel. It is my aim to try and repair relations between the State of Israel and the Islamic Republic of Iran and bring an end to the Iran and Israel proxy war which has been ongoing since 1985. I look forward to your response. ____________________________________ Naftali Bennett Prime Minister of Israel |
