As much as the Republic of China had risen with honest goals of bringing true and full democracy to a country that had been under 5000 years of single-person or single-party rule, the reality was that their goal was impossible right off the start. 1.4 billion people needed a strong but fair central hand. Not tyranny but a strong leader to set them on the right path. As the oldest still standing civilization in the world, that was the fundamental duty of those that led it. The Republican Army knew this very well. Initially they had hopes that the President would soon come to this realization however she seemed committed to the failed project of Chinese democracy. She, however, was not the only person in the Ming dynasty that could rally the nation. And during the formation of the Republic two cousins had already battled it out over the future course of China. While the faction led by the Ming President had won out, their failures had now led to the other faction getting the majority support from both the bureaucracy and more importantly the military.

Ai found herself in her office looking over the plans in front of her. Ever since she had been pushed into the periphery by her cousin she had watched with frustration as China's potential was wasted. However until the very end she had held hope that dialogue could have brought the two sides together. Unfortunately, at this point there was no choice but to take the next step.
"The plan looks good, are all assets in place?" She asked, she had served in the special forces before so she was well aware of the many things that could go wrong between the plan being made and executed. With all of this being done in the blind spots of the Republican faction and the Intelligence community, those risks increased exponentially. It was an all or nothing gamble. A single targeted strike to take out the Republican institutions, and detain the key governmental officials. Once that was done they could take power without a civil war, but if they failed that worst case scenario was almost inevitable. And if they failed catastrophically, even the eradication of their entire movement could not be ruled out. While 1.4 billion people would be unaware the very future of China was going to be decided.
"Yes, ma'am. We have moved the Cheetahs and Central Plains Tigers to the city under the guise of exercises for the upcoming parade. The 81st Group Army has been stationed within the city for a while already and we have managed to install all our people in the key spots. So if worst comes to worse we have access to tanks"
Ai nodded before getting up from her seat and walking to the window overlooking the gardens of the Linggu Temple. The Buddhists had been a vital source of support for the movement and had long opposed the Republicans. As the largest religion in China by far their influence would also pacify the people after the news became public. Finally, of course it was also helpful that at this stage of the planning they provided a safe residence in case their movement was caught and their offices raided by the authorities. "Give the order"

Even at this time of night the lights in Beijing remained ever-present. Much like other metropolises of its size the city never truly slept, Xu Lian found himself doing a final check of his gear at the position that had been designated point A as the rest of his unit did the same. While the city never slept, this part near the Forbidden City was highly regulated and as such the chance of encountering a civilian was minimal. There had also been no sign that the Republican Guard units stationed near the gates were aware of anything going on. After checking with the rest of his guys that they were all ready he grabbed his phone. With the enemy units using the same operation radio communication wasn't exactly smart so they had shifted to a secure communications app for now. Only seconds after the message was sent multiple large explosions could be heard near the walls of the Forbidden City. Car bombs had been prepared by other units to create a distraction. Something that seemed to work as personnel was rapidly shifted away from the gate to reinforce security operations at the two gates near the explosions. With only half a dozen guards left the time to breach was now.
Lian would signal two snipers on a nearby roof to shoot the remaining guards. Their goal was to minimize casualties but some blood had to flow for the cause. Once the guards were down he would signal the others to move in. Insiders were unable to divert guards from the gates themselves but they were able to make sure that once inside there was an open passage that led directly to the palace where the President slept. Once inside the palace they encountered some workers and guards but the surprise of their presence and the speed at which these operators worked meant they could be easily subdued without killing them. As they approached the President's bedroom there was some final resistance by her closest security detail but as well trained as these were, they were still caught by surprise and could do very little against bullets. Out of respect for her dignity he ordered the rest of the unit to stand guard while he kicked in the locked door and moved inside raising his rifle at the woman who had already been awoken by the earlier gunshots.
"Madam President, for the crimes of corruption, dereliction of duty, and treason against the Chinese people I am placing you under arrest. You have five minutes to get dressed. I have men at all exit points so do not try to escape" He said before turning back around and stepping outside.
While this operation was ongoing other units moved simultaneously to take control over the vital Ministries, the legislature and the court. Imperialists in other major cities and provincial capitals would also move to remove any Republicans from power. By sunrise the total tally would be at 1,460 dead and 7,250 captured.

As people awoke throughout China to reports of clashes between military units and Republican Guards as well as explosions in Beijing panic would begin to rise. When this was combined with news that the stock markets had been blocked off and tanks were driving through major cities it had reached levels that they had to make an announcement.
Backed by the new Imperial Banner, Ming Ai said down in front of a camera, which through their control over the governmental television systems would be broadcast on all channels.
"People of China,
It is with great sadness that I must announce the arrest of my dear cousin President Ming as well as various Ministers and officials throughout the country for their crimes against China. Our civilization has stood for 5000 years. We were the first to invent papermaking, printing, gunpowder and the compass. Our influence reached so far that we became the very model of a civilization that our neighbours modelled their own on. However, for the past two hundred years China has continued to decline due to corrupt and ineffective governance.
This time things will be different, the Mandate of Heaven which has so long been absent of our leaders has returned where it truly belongs. I hereby declare that henceforth China shall be known as the Celestial Empire. We will rebuild our greatness, we will not let foreign powers subjugate us and more importantly we will not let domestic enemies sabotage us from within.
Over the next weeks and months elections will be held for various positions including the legislature and members of the executive, but that can only take place after the holdouts of corruption have been dealt with. For that purpose effective as of 2 AM today I have placed the entire territory of the Celestial Empire under martial law.
Do not fear my people, these actions are only aimed at maintaining order and guaranteeing your safety. Once this short period of chaos is over things will go back to normal, and we will bring those who betrayed you to justice."
