UNIT TYPES

Rifle Companies

While the rifle companies of the three Ranger Battalions are the most common, they are among the best available units in the United States Army. While these companies are in the simplest of terms light infantry, these are exceptionally formittable. 75th Ranger Regiment rifle companies are all capable of airborne and air assault operations. These companies are also capable of operating in marine environments such as beaches, rivers, and swamps and have training in using small boats for transport and in combat situations. The individual rifle companies are capable of coordinating with other companies, or entire battalions, to conduct large-scale warfare while also being able to act on their own in small-scale operations. If necessary, the rifle companies can essentially act as marine units, airborne/air assault units, units that can independently function behind enemy lines or in isolated locations, and they can even be used for basic littoral underwater operations. The rifle companies are, in many ways, the Swiss Army Knife of the U.S. Army.

The Specialty Companies are a hybrid between the rifle companies and the Regimental Reconnaissance Company. While they are capable of all the same missions and operations as the rifle companies, they have additional training that make them especially useful in larger-scale operations where the rifle companies are being used in direct action operations. The specialty companies exist to be used to execute special missions in combat scenarios in order to assist a larger force, or they can be used in ambushes, to sabotage enemy equipment or infrastructure, or to act as a spearhead in a new avenue of combat. The specialty companies also have more specific training in aquatic and air-based operations and could also be used for VIP extraction (or assassination), or for high-stakes spearhead missions such as retaking captured infrastructure (i.e. an offshore oil rig).

The Regimental Reconnaissance Company is the most capable of all the companies in the 75th Ranger Regiment. This company is cross-trained and capable of all missions that the other units can conduct, plus more. The purpose of the company is to be deployed very close to enemy units or infrastructure, or behind enemy lines, and to transmit valuable information about the enemy to friendly forces - the company was specifically created to conduct special reconnaissance and close target reconnaissance operations, and advanced force operation. The highly trained Rangers in the company are capable of various types of operations just as those in the rifle companies, but they can also conduct more specialized operations such as HALO jumps, HAHO jumps, SCUBA operations, ambushes, airfield seizure, watercraft operations, use explosives, evade the enemy, and thrive in isolation. By some comparisons, the Regimental Reconnaissance Company is the closest the 45th Ranger Regiment has to a Tier I Special Mission Unit.
