Operation Deny Flight II

TOP SECRET
EYES ONLY

The Objectives, as laid out by High Command:
  • Enforce the Italian Military Exclusion Zone over the Adriatic Sea.
  • Prevent any military actions between the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the State of Turkey in the Adriatic Sea

Deployment List

  • Third Air Defense Squadron "Spare", Flight 1, 5 Pilots, 5x F-16E Block 60 Fighting Falcon fighters. Guns fully loaded, 2x IRIS-T Missiles each, 1040 US Gal. Drop Tanks (Raising Combat Radius to ~740 nm (1370 Km).)
  • HMS Pius X, FREMM-class frigate, Full Complement (Crew, Ammunition, Weapons, Supplies, and Fuel)

The aircraft would take off from Istrana Airport.

They would engage in a patrol pattern over the strait, alternating between 30,000 ft and 2,000 feet, with one of them always staying at 30,000 to fly top-cover. They would periodically return to the airport for refueling to ensure that they can keep up their patrol with minimal worries. Any unauthorized aircraft would be approached from 2,000 feet above and 2,000 feet below with the flight breaking up into two elements to do so. Continued unresponsiveness or noncompliance with the F-16s would result in the possibility of a shoot-down order.

The Pius X would assume a defensive patrol pattern taking it between the ports of Taranto to Pescara, and then to Venice and Trieste and back, maintaining about 100 nmi off the Italian Coast where possible, except when visiting the ports for resupply. They would be authorized to carry out the same actions as the F-16s in regards to contacting unauthorized contacts.

The F-16s would return to base and Flight II would take their place.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This wasn't Spare 8's first flight behind the stick of an F-16. Every few days the squadron'd go up for a couple hours, just to keep themselves acquainted with their pieces of machinery. This was, however, Spare 8's first combat sortie. No dacing around on this mission. Drop Tanks, AAMs, these F-16s were loaded down with the weapons they'd need to go to war.

A voice rang out over the radio, causing him to switch to the encrypted Italian Air Force comms.

"8, tighten the hell up. You're terrifying me back there."

"Copy that Ole' man," he called back to the squadron leader. He'd never understand why 1, 7, 8, 9 and 10 were on Flight II and 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 in Flight I. Sure, the leader gave something about better pilots leading the weaker ones, but it still didn't make sense to 8.

The F-16s continued their montonous path, 1 and 8-10 of them in the Finger 4 Formation, with Spare 7 holding his own pattern at 30,000. This was going to be a long day, either way.

In response to present actions in Spain, Operation Deny Flight II would be canceled, all F-16s would return to their bases and the HRMS Pius X would return to port in Naples.
