PROJECT INFORMATION | In addition to the main line between Addis Ababa and the Djibouti Border, the Government announced a multi-billion long term project to modernize and expand the railway network across all of Ethiopia, connective production centers and manufacturing industries and inducing a more cohesive population. Planned to be centered around the Addis Ababa metropolitan area, the network will consist of 7 different lines, which will be interconnected. Line 1 (Red Line): Addis Ababa - Dima (Connection to South Sudan and Gabon) Line 2 (Orange Line): Ejaji - Kurmuk Line 3 (Green Line): Modjo - Moyale Line 4 (Crimson Line): Addis Ababa - Gamera Line 5 (Blue Line): Awash - Humera (connection north Sudan, Line 6 (Light Blue Line): Finote Selam - Galafi (Connection to Djibouti) Line 7 (Purple Line): Wereta - Metema All lines will be double-tracked and electric. Each line will also serve multiple cities, villages, mines, farms, national parks etc. along their planned routes. Supporting infrastructure such as passenger and cargo stations and maintenance areas are included in the budget and will be constructed following operational and efficiency requirements. This is a long term, big investment project that is expected to have a fundamental impact in the nation’s economic development. |
