PROJECT INFORMATION | Project FA-x is an attempt by Portugal to create its own line of Surface to Air Missiles for its use in both the Army and the Navy, as newly acquired manufacturer UMM is contracted to design the Missile. The Missile is designed to be able to down enemy aircraft, as well as large-enough missiles. The Missile is designed with a two-stage design, the booster stage, wherein the projectile is launched up into the air, and then the tracking stage, where the missile will utilize Semi-Active Radar Homing guidance system in intercepting the target. The missile itself is expected to weigh around 220-240kg, around 4 meters long, as well with a warhead designed to be a High-Explosive Annular Blast Fragmentation type warhead, with a proximity fused detonation detonator. The missile is designed so that it can be readily retrofitted to existing designs in both land-based and water-based equipment. Trials are to be conducted in the Lince Military Research Facility. The first prototype is to be named 'UMM-1 Flecha do Ar.' with subsequent designs be designated with the change of the number. |
