PROJECT INFORMATION |
The Ulyanovsk-class is a fixed-wing aircraft carrier first ordered by the Soviet Union in 1986, but its construction had been cancelled following its collapse. It is a nuclear-powered supercarrier, to match American supercarriers in size and surpass them in capabilities. It will replace all aircraft carries currently in operation by the Russian Navy. The ship will be equipped with steam catapults that could launch fully loaded aircraft weighing up to 95,000lbs. This represents a massive advance over the Kuznetsov-class, which only launched high-powered aircraft from ski-jumps. It will be built with two steam catapults, a ski-jump, and 4 arresting gears. The configuration itself is similar to US Navy carries but with the typical Soviet practice of adding anti-ship missile and surface-to-air missile launchers. For storing aircraft, it will have a 175x32x7.9m hangar deck with aircraft elevated to the flight deck by 3 elevators with carrying capacities of 50 tons (two on the starboard side and one on the port). The stern will house the "Luna" optical landing guidance system. General Characteristics: Displacement: 65,800 tons standard 75,000 tons full load Length: 321.2m (1,054ft) overall Beam: 83.9m (275ft) overall 40m (130ft) at waterline Draught: 10.6m (35ft) Propulsion: x4 KN-3 nuclear reactors x4 steam turbines, four shafts, 280,000 shp (210,000 kW) Speed: 30 knots (56 km/h) Range: Unlimited; 20-25 years of reactor fuel Endurance: 90 days of supplies Complement: 3,400 total Electronics/Systems: x1 MR-710 Fregar-MA (Top Plate-B) 3D Air Search Radar, x2 MR-320M Topaz (Strut Pair) Air Search Radars, x3 MR-212/201 Vaygach-U (Palm Frond) Navigation Radars, x2 Fly Trap Carrier Approach Radars, x1 MG-365 Zvezda M-1 Hull-Mounted Low-Frequency Sonar, x4 MR-360 Podkat (Cross Sword) Fire Control Systems, x8 3P-87 (Hot Flash) Fire Control Systems, x1 Bob Tail Telescoping Optronic Director, x3 Tin Man TV/IR/Laser Optronic Systems, x4 Spektr-F (Half Cup) Laser Warning Systems, x8 Wine Glass Intercept/Jammers, x4 Flat Track Intercept/Jammers, x8 Bell Push Intercept/Jammers, x4 Bell Nip Intercept/Jammers, x3 Cross Loop Direction Finder/ESM Systems, x1 NBC Water Washdown System, x2 Twin PK-2 Decoy Rocket Launchers, and x2 10-Round Fixed PK-10 Decoy Rocket Launchers. Armament: x12 P-700 Granit SSMs, x192 3S90 "Ezh" Buk SAMs, x8 CADS-N-1 CIWS, x8 AK-630 Anti-Aircraft Cannons, and 2 x RPK-5 (UDAV-1) ASW Rocket Systems. Aircraft Carried: x44 Sukhoi Su-33 and/or Mikoyan MiG-29K Fighters, x6 Airborne Early Warning Aircraft, x16 Kamov Ka-27 Anti-Submarine Warfare Helicopters, and x2 Kamov Ka-27PS Air-Sea Rescue Helicopters. The Ministry of Defense expected the price of the Ulyanovsk-class to be slighter more than the American Kitty Hawk-class supercarriers due to their similar tonnage. |
