PROJECT INFORMATION | The National Health Insurance Systems (NHIS) was previously consolidated and in the process of merger. Following the actions, the Korean Government was able to achieve universal healthcare coverage, which created a stable basis of healthcare for all citizens. Through universal health coverage, all citizens are able to receive the benefits for disease prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation, as well as for the promotion of their overall wellness. New expansions now cover severe diseases, such as cancer, heart, cerebrovascular, and other rare diseases that had not been previously covered by NHIS. Services and financing for such services now cover elective services, fees for higher-grade hospital beds, care services, and reducing the burden of health insurance contributions for lower-income households. In order to ensure that most of our citizens receive pension benefits, the Ministry has been pursuing policies that partially subsidize contribution payment, improve enrollment conditions for low-wage and part-time workers, and establish a pension credit policy. The growth of the healthcare industry contributes to improving the overall health levels and facilitated the creation quality jobs. The government education package now covers the funding of 100,000 new doctors over the next decade for assisting non-urban communities. The new medical facilities produced for research and development have the goal of the development of new drugs and medical devices in the healthcare industry, which will eventually enhance both the overall standard of healthcare and industry competence. With an extensive pool of talented medical professionals and focusing on drug creation based on new information from advanced ICT infrastructure, the Korean healthcare industry has gained a competitive edge in the global market. The healthcare system consists of both western and traditional Korean medical practices. This unique situation allows traditional Korean medicine to provide an extensive range of medical advice, care, and monitoring that does not exist in other countries. This correlates with an improvement to the citizens’ health and elevates the competitiveness of traditional Korean medicine. Focusing on four critical objectives: strengthening empirical approach; increasing national health insurance coverage; promoting growth of the industry through technological innovation and application; and increasing international competitiveness, Korea is aiming to become a world healthcare center for research and innovation, care and patient wellness, and national consciousness on health. The 2.3 billion dollar investment into healthcare infrastructure will cover health innovation, hospital maintenance and refurbishing, building ICU and containment facilities, oxygen pipe maintenance, OBYGN and maternal care expansion, medical professional debt relief, healthcare insurance financing, and a wide range of other reform measures. |
