PROJECT INFORMATION | The Nordic Defence Network is the most advanced networks of air, sea and ground defence globally. It is unrivalled in Europe and certainly worldwide. The next stage of this network was to expand into anti-submarine defence in order to defend primarily Nordic Council member states; essentially this was one of the final jigsaw pieces to the iron dome securing the network. Decision of where the SOSUS locations were to be was heavily researched and meticulously planned to ensure maximum operational capability. SOSUS (sound surveillance system) systems consisted of bottom-mounted hydrophone arrays connected by underwater cables to facilities ashore. The individual arrays were installed primarily on continental slopes and seamounts at locations optimised for undistorted long range acoustic propagation. The combination of location within the ocean and the sensitivity of arrays allowed the system to detect acoustic power of less than a single watt at ranges of several hundred kilometres. All locations are highly top secret and of two classes N/DSS-101 (a range of 200km) and N/DSS-102 (a range of 400km). All positions feed directly to NORSCOM. 57.533290,10.105541 (N/DSS-101) 54.793448,13.523333 (N/DSS-101) 56.090800,18.626941 (N/DSS-101) 58.838579,20.974268 (N/DSS-101) 59.817892,25.920413 (N/DSS-101) 61.968335,19.673383 (N/DSS-101) 64.780631,23.162892 (N/DSS-101) 77.365605,-5.214458 (N/DSS-102) 73.416541,18.599676 (N/DSS-102) |
